This paper reflects upon knowledge management terminology controversies spread in several areas by Michael Polanyi’s philosophical view about tacit knowledge and based on his insight “we know more than we can tell”. For this author, tacit knowledge concerns the knowledge an individual acquired through his/her life experience; thus, it is subjective and consists of his/her personal skills that being the reason why it is hard to formalize . This is the main argument discussed in this study. From Polanyi’s ideas, this study asks: Is it possible to manage knowledge? The literature review intentionally selected from business administration and information science presents divergent views on either management or creation of knowledge, and strategies employed by organizations to extend knowledge. The conclusion reached from the comparison between Polanyi’s ideas and other authors is that those strategies – at least in the selected literature – focus on methodologies that lead to knowledge creation instead of knowledge management, as it is often so-called.

This text aims to describe the operational procedures for the elaboration of a sustainability report for small and medium size companies based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. The study was developed in a service provider company located in Chapecó – SC. It is a descriptive and qualitative research and the data was collected in the first semester of 2014. Results showed that the difficulties in the elaboration of a sustainability report in a small company are great due to the lack of human resources to monitor indicators. For such enterprise to be successful, it is necessary to inform the members of the team about the importance and need to follow the performance indicators of the economic, social and environmental areas. Besides, the strategic area of the organization has to be directly involved in the process in order to legitimate the idea in the organizational context. We suggested the creation of a sustainability committee to be coordinated by the director of the company who will promote the engagement of all collaborators in the creation of a culture of sustainability. The next step is the training and monitoring of indicators which are relevant for the management. Next, all registers have to bemade and tabulated in a report format for subsequent communication to all parts involved in the process. An Excel spreadsheet is to be adopted as a tool and it will stress the indicators, their measurement metrics and the monthly performance achieved by the organization. In possession of all data, it is possible to elaborate a sustainability report and create goals for continuous improvement.

Changes triggered by Internet, that allows for close ties between customers and suppliers, has promoted increasing academic and corporate questioning and proposals regarding the use of social media as marketing tools. Thus, this study sought to investigate the impact of business actions on social networks based on interactions and engagement of users and its impacts on the popularity of a brand in the virtual environment. Taking as the unit of analysis Fiat (Brazil) fan page on Facebook, on a longitudinal perspective over a period of 53 weeks, it was concluded that the interactions of the official page’s administrator and engagement of users promote the growth of popularity and brand engagement in the virtual environment. Thus, organizations need to understand how their actions on social medias are reverberating, evaluating factors such as type of message, day of week and post time.

The implementation of electronic ticketing systems (ETS) involves a number of choices beyond those of a technical nature. To broaden the understanding of these systems, we researched the Metropolitan Eletronic Voucher (MEV) of ETS in the Metropolitan Area of Recife, based on the theory of social construction of technology and discourse theory, which enabled us to understand the social and political dimensions of that system. This on the grounds that such knowledge can serve as the basis for implementing most appropriate practices to manage these systems. To analyze the construction of discourses by relevant groups of the system, we used the following corpus: the websites of ETSs, articles of experts in the area, news from press and personal interviews with agents of the ticketing system. After analyzing the demands, convergences, peculiarities and contradictions found in discourse about the ETS in metropolitan area of Recife, we consider that it is a system whose articulation occurs around demands related to operational functions - control and supervision – not taking into account other needs, among which are those that could more directly meet the demands for mobility of users.

The intense flow of information in the competitive environment has forced organizations to seek partnerships as a strategy for innovation and have knowledge resources channeled into various agents which communicate, composing what is called open innovation model. Thus, the client takes on a new role within the innovation chain of enterprises, redefining the way in which services are provided and changing the pattern of competition of enterprises. Based on these considerations, the article seeks to explore how the customer perceives himself within the paradigm of open innovation in its relationship with business services. The research is quantitative and descriptive in approach, and it is based on the hypothetical-deductive method and having as strategy a survey performed with university students. Data was collected through the use of closed question questionnaire and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis as a way to validate the constructs and their dimensions, and the search for factors that could show whether the three hypotheses are valid or not: (i) clients currently perceive their role in the chain of firms, (ii) customers value service firms that innovate openly, and (iii) the open innovation model has changed the business environment in the customer perspective. As a result we obtained the validation of these hypotheses and the development of a model entitled “Six Factors Model of Perception”, which represents customer perception towards the model of open innovation.

This paper presents a survey of articles that address the topic technological demands. The study was conducted using a scientometric analysis in order to identify the main actors and institutions that discuss the topic, as well as the main categories, keywords, the temporal evolution of the published articles, the main cited references, the network of collaborating institutions, co-authorship and keywords. The procedures performed were: (1) defining the search term more suitable for the data extraction related to technological demands; (2) extraction of data on Web of Science (WoS) basis; (3) selecting and organizing data of publication year, Web of Science categories, authors, affiliate institutions, keywords and cited references; (4) selection of only the data related to articles published in journals, excluding other records; (5) analysis of scientific production.We analysed 246 articles covering the period from1968 to 2013 . The main results showed that the topic is still not consolidated. The maximum number of records per author is limited to two articles and almost 50% of the records have authors affiliated to only one institution. On the other hand we observed a growing interest in the subject from the increased number of publications over the years.

Currently knowledge is the main factor of production organizations. Among the companies that stand out as knowledge intensive organizations are the technology based organizations. The objective of this study was to show the actions of knowledge management of a technology-based company from Joinville-SC. A qualitative, exploratory and explanatory case study was carried out, using primary data collected in two steps. The first collection was made through a survey with open questions which was sent by e-mail to two collaborators of the organization concerned. The second through calls to the same collaborators in order to better understand the reality of the business and understand the answers to the questionnaire. Among the main results we can mention the fact that the company makes use of tools such as communities of practice, identified in organizational routines, but these were not mentioned by the respondents.

This article highlights the importance of continuous acquisition of new knowledge in the pursuit of competitiveness and innovation in organizations. In this context, it aims to characterize knowledge management in a large company in Jaraguá do Sul, in the northern region of the State of Santa Catarina. To collect data we used a questionnaire that is part of a global survey that has the purpose of conducting a review of the current state of the activities and progress of knowledge management in the context of academic research and organizational practice. The data revealed that, in the company researched, there are still challenges to be met and it also identified the need for future research in knowledge management.

This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the reality of a Brazilian family owned business in transition from the family business administration model to a professional model of management. The company studied is a small Brazilian bookstore founded in 2000, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It currently has six stores and one franchised store and a total of forty employees.The adminstration of the enterprise, which is basically familiar, needs a new management model to follow the pace of its expansion. The research method adopted was the case study with data collection through semi-structured interviews with company managers. The main results showed that the company is in the initial stages of a professionalization process. It needs, however, to accelerate this process by taking a proactive stance that supports the growth of the company.

The aim of this study is to identify determinant variables of behavior profile in the purchase of books in online retail. Therefore, in addition to literature review that highlights the environment of rapid change in retail, where information technology is gaining more importance in the relationship between consumers and retailers, a quantitative descriptive survey of 100 book consumers was carried out in the city of Sao Paulo. The data analysis model was based on binary logistic regression. Analyses indicated that among the variables used in the research group, two of them - the quantity of books read in the last year and the use of mobile phone to access the internet - may be influencing consumer behavior and guiding book purchase decision in online stores. The results can serve as a basis for further studies and simulations that contribute to increase the knowledge about consumers, who are more and more connected, and guide retailers to understand them and meet their needs.
