The perception of audit rotation within the independent auditors’ view

The audit rotation in Brazil was initiated by the Central Bank of Brazil in response to scandals that have occurred and had put at risk the image of audit firms. Subsequently, the rotation was adopted by the Brazilian Securities Commission, encompassing the publicly-traded companies listed on the stock exchange. Turnover has become a controversial subject, as influences, somehow, in the auditors' relationship with their customers as well as the entire market for audit firms, questioning, this way, its effectiveness. Considering these facts, the aim of this study was to verify with the independent auditors’ perception under the audit rotation seeking to understand whether they are favorable or not to this procedure. Thus, this study evaluated the perception of 64 independent auditors of 6 different audit firms, through the survey approach with open and closed questions. The mainly results found that: 91% of the respondents are in favor of the audit rotation; 58% of the auditors believe that the rotation could inhibit the accounting scandals; 56% believe that the costs involved in the rotation turnover outweighs the gains; 76% believe that the accumulated knowledge generates addiction to work; 48% believe that auditors approach the client if there is no rotation. On the other hand, 64 % say that there is a loss of efficiency in auditing with the implementation of rotation and that 74 % of audited companies have not joined the CAE with intent to extend the period of 5 to 10 years of the same auditing firm. The findings of this study when compared to the opinion of public accountancy bodies in relation to the rotation, reveal contradictions. While 91 % of the auditors surveyed advocate the rotation should occur by the company rotation or by rotation of the independent auditor, the CFC and IBRACON are not favorable to rotation. Moreover, CVM provides the rotation for audit firms and the Central Bank for professionals with managerial positions.

The aim of this paper is to characterize the costs of Non-Audit Services - SNA of the largest companies listed at BM&FBOVESPA. To achieve this study, the Reference Form - FR and Management Report - RA were used to find information about SNAdisclosed in 2010 by the top 100 companies ranked by market value, which were listed at Exame magazine. To identify elements that characterize groups of firms with different SNA fees analysis of variance was used, evaluating variables from the total assets, equity, net income and external audit services – SAE fees. The results show that most SNAare used by companies to audit tax (31%). Moreover, the audit SOX holds a significant cost, representing 16% of total SNA, but there is a low incidence, which can be justified by a concern with recent corporate governance. One concern with the disclosure of SNA can arise because 50% of the costs evidenced by the companies comprising the group "other services" and the types of services that are part of this group are not explained. In addition, information inconsistencies were found between RF and RA in 35% of the companies. Concerning the cost variable of SNA, this study provides evidence that the highest SNA fees were evidenced by the sample companies which evidenced the highest SAE fees.

Factors related to the level of disclosure of intangible assets after the adoption of IFRS for companies from IGC of BM&FBovespa

The objective of this study is to identify factors that influence the level of disclosure of information about intangible assets in companies listed at the BM&FBovespa IGC in the period after the adoption of IFRS. For this research, descriptive document and quantitative were outlined. The sample is comprised of 125 nonfinancial companies that make up the Corporate Governance Index (IGC) of BM&FBovespa. The first analysis was based on the Explaining Notes in the Management Reports of Directors which were disclosed in 2011 in order to classify the information highlighted on intangible assets, through a check list developed from the information contained in the CPC 04 R1 (2010). For the observations of the items to be disclosed given in the check list an adapted score from Boff, Beuren and Hein (2009) was applied. For the data analysis, a Multiple Linear Regression was made, relating the size factor, age, classification of business segments, corporate governance, capital concentration, ADR issuance and leverage with the disclosure of information about intangible assets, in order to achieve the research objective. The results indicate that from the factors analyzed, only the variables related to the level of corporate governance, the percentage of common shares and sectoral classification of companies have a significant relationship with the level of disclosure of intangible assets of companies listed at IGC.

The main objective of this study was to identify which abilities and competences are developed in post-graduation (sense) courses with emphasis in controlling, which are related to the profile contemplated in the literature for the professional controller. The research is based on theoretical studies developed by Baruch and Peiperl (2000), Baruch and Lemming (2001) and Baruch et al (2003), about the skills and abilities developed from graduate courses (Master of Business Administration - MBA). As the specific skills of the controller, the research was based on studies conducted by Kester (1928), Moseley and Henning (1970), Martin (2002), Anthony; Govindarajan (2002); Horngren; Sundem and Stratton (2004). The research is characterized as exploratory and quantitative. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire applied for students of post-graduation courses in the city of João Pessoa/PB. The study indicates which competences were perceived as better developed, among which are: financial skills, economic evaluation, abilities related to accounting and strategic planning. The results contribute to strengthen the thought that a post-graduation course can add value to graduates, making them more prepared for the market demand.

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the implementation of activity based costing for expenditure management of a food service company. A descriptive study was carried out through a case study with qualitative approach. The instruments used in data collection were interviews and primary data. Descriptive analysis was used for data analysis and processing. The proposal built on activity based costing and on the study developed by Lippel (2002) considered the reality experienced by the restaurant and enabled the identification of the existing processes and activities, the costs of such processes and activities, the costs allocated to these products as well as the allocation of expenditure regarding raw materials, labor and other expenses from the products. The proposal allows analyzing information regarding the profitability of each dish, selling price and amount sold, enabling the manager to consider the best composition of the menu, mix of products offered and opt for dishes that represent the best value for money for the restaurant.
