The Brazilian university according to the prismatic model. This article is an attempt to show the universal aplicability of Fred Riggs' prismatic model; its validity to Western developing societies mainly to the Brazilian university system. After analyzing the university's role and the impact of changes brought out by the university reform the author identifies several contradictions between prescribed and observed procedures, desirable and actually attained results as a consequence of political and cultural pressures. Regarding systematization such examples are presented as following: 1) the nature of university; 2) the functions: teaching and research; 3) the university and the need to attend priority areas of development; 4) university structure, and its features of the "sala" model; 5) distinct items such as: entrance examination, flexibility in teaching and rationality of credit system, teaching and evaluation procedures, the economic-financial system and so on. The author concludes that the university reform has introduced a tendency toward change in the Brazilian university in a sense that it should not only keep up with changes in society but also become a pioneer in social change and an active agent of national development.
