PURPOSE – Based on a multi-case analysis of small businesses in the metal-mechanical industry in the regionof Sorocaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, the purpose of this paper is to analyze how small businesses (in termsof the owner, business, and influences exerted by the environment) influence innovation. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – Six case studies are used to analyze the Brazilian metal-mechanicalindustry. The data are collected through semi-structured interviews and direct observations. In addition,innovations over the previous five years are evaluated in order to establish a comparative patternbetween companies. FINDINGS – This study examines how facilitating factors are related to the owners of small businesses.These factors include owners’ personal ambitions, the centralization of decisions, and their confidence in theirability to make effective decisions. Factors related to the organization that favor innovation include a simpleand streamlined structure and fewer levels of bureaucracy, whereas low capital intensity limit innovation.While some factors related to the environment favor innovation, others have a limiting effect (e.g. short-termhorizons and a lack of formal strategic planning). ORIGINALITY/VALUE – The main contribution of this research is to show that innovation is not synonymouswith financial investment. Strategic reorganization and the rationalization of productive resources throughcompetitive priorities may lead to innovation in different spheres, helping to increase the competitiveness andstrength of the national economy.

PURPOSE – Thepurposeofthispaperistoinvestigatehowcertaincharacteristicsoftheuniversity–industry– government collaboration facilitate knowledge creation and management, hence innovation focusing on particularities of the Brazilian scenario. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – As a conceptual basis, there are correlations between theories of knowledge management and the Triple Helix, a model referenced to university–industry–government cooperation. The research was conducted through a multiple case study at two National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs in Portuguese). FINDINGS – The main results show the importance of participation in the INCT program, as it enables the creation of an organizational structure with the coordinator’s leadership, who directs the flow of knowledge among organizations and stimulates innovation. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – The choice of the topic is justified by the lack of studies on the identification and analyses of the main aspects of this type of collaboration in an integrated way.

The Institutional Role of Business School Accreditation Agencies: A Systematic Literature Review

PURPOSE – Accreditation is a growing phenomenon and has begun to permeate scientific studies, most of which are quantitative, since they focus on the process of accreditation and its positive or negative effects. Only a few studies have an alyzed this phenomen on from the perspective of institutional theory. As there is no consensus regarding the performance of accreditation agencies, the purpose of this paper is to identify their institutional role in the global orientation of the organizational practices, values and decisions of business schools (BS). DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – A systematic literature review enabled us to identify scientific publications since 2002 that have used institutional theory when discussing BS accreditation agencies. Anin-depth reading of these articles ledusto identify the most frequent, similar and contrasting perspectives. Seven aspects were analyzed in each article: theme, research assumption, theoretical basis, method, research context, result and suggestions for future studies. FINDINGS – The findings suggest a certain duality in the role of these agencies. If, on the one hand, they are responsible for providing a quality seal, on the other hand, they promote legitimacy in the field by institutionalizing international rules. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – By investigating the performance of these agencies as global institutional bodies, the authors extrapolated the traditional discussion on the dynamic of interaction between local actors who both influence the field and are influenced by it, a recurring theme in institutional theory.

Using Structural Equation Modeling: Patterns and Trends of Publications in Brazilian Journals

PURPOSE – The purpose of this paper is to analyze patterns and trends of articles that present the use of structural equation modeling (SEM) and that were published in several Brazilian journals. In addition, this paper maps the institutions where the authors of the identified articles are affiliated, and discusses aspects of searching the articles in journals’ archives and other scientific databases. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – The work used bibliometrics, which is one of the forms of evaluation and measurement of information flows in scientific knowledge, using mathematical and statistical methods. FINDINGS – The study showed an exponential growth in using SEM in several areas in recent years, with predominance in marketing. Most of the publications were produced by authors from institutions such as USP, FGV and UFRGS, but most authors published only one article using SEM. Almost all published articles used one of the three most common software, especially AMOS®. Surprisingly, many articles did not mention the software used, indicating methodological flaw. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS – Weaknesses were found regarding the search for articles in the different sources used, indicating that, for literature reviews, the research should be conducted in several databases in a complementary way and not alternatively. This fact becomes critical especially when expressions in languages other than Portuguese were used. This situation suggests an aggravating lack of visibility for the Brazilian scientific community since the articles are less likely to be found. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – The paper shows that among the various techniques of multivariate data analysis used in the field of administration, SEM has gained prominence being operationalized using specific software.

Identifying Structural Similarities between Stricto Sensu Post-Graduation Programs in Management Regarding the Strategy Tripod

PURPOSE – The purpose of this paper is to identify the structural similarities between stricto sensupost-graduation programs in management through the formation of clusters, with the strategy tripod as a back drop (Peng, 2002; Peng et al., 2009). DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – The co-plot method was used as a tool. It was chosen because it simultaneously enables joint and individual observations of comments and variables. FINDINGS – The results showed the formation of clusters among the programs, identifying a series of similarities between their components. The age and number of lines of research of the programs were the determining variables to identify isomorphism among the clusters. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS – The main limitation of the study lies in the updating of information at the source of the data collection. All the data were collected from the Sucupira Platform for CAPES Triennial Evaluation of 2013. However, when the authors accessed the portals of the programs, the authors found that some data were outdated. Nevertheless, the authors limited themselves to using official data. Therefore, even if the authors found divergences or inconsistencies regarding the published information, the authors decided touse the official data made available by CAPES on the Sucupira Platform for the period in question. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – Understanding that the results through the approaches of the industry-based view, resource-based view and institution-based view were insufficient for a thorough analysis, it is demonstrated inisolation that none of these succeeds in explaining the organizational context that permeates Brazilian stricto sensupost-graduation institutions. In this organizational field, the three views are not at the same theoretical level. The institutional view overlaps with the strategic competitive views. Therefore, the study contributes to reorganizing the strategy tripod and the proposed articulation between the arrangement of theory, method and field research.

Individual Environmental Scanning as a Barrier to Collective Processes in Organizations: A View Based on the Illusion of Control

PURPOSE – The purpose of this paper is to understand how illusion of control (IOC) can affect the implementation of formal processes of environmental scanning in organizations. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – Based on the proposed research question, an exploratory study was chosen, which could collaborate with future studies. There were conducted three semi-structured interviews with CEOs working in medium/large technology companies. FINDINGS – Behavioral traits were identified—such as overconfidence and underestimation of risks—which are directly related to the IOC’s theory. The belief that there is no added value to the company in adopting organizational strategic processes—such as environmental scanning—answers the research question and contributes to the development of new studies. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS – This study has as limitation the fact that it proposed the interviews to an inexpressive number of respondents, exclusively with the intention to explore better the relation between the IOC and the formal processes of environmental scanning. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS – This research advances the understanding of the difficulty in adopting formal environmental scanning practices in organizations. It can also help understand the motivations of executives for adopting (or not adopting) such practices. Finally, it is possible to know and understand the individual approach to environmental scanning, as well as its limitations. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – This research discusses the themes of IOC and environmental scanning, demonstrating how cognitive factors can affect strategic decision making in an organization.
