Show Abstract
This paper analyzes the eight winning projects of the 1st “Prêmio Excelência em Gestão Pública do Governo de Minas Gerais” (State of Minas Gerais Award for Excellence in Public Sector Management), which was held in 2006, highlighting the similarities and differences among them. The article is based on the main features of theoretical and practical international movement toward the New Public Management: decentralization, flat hierarchies, focus on the client-citizen, wider participation and accountability of public officials, non-hierarchical forms of control, and appropriate use of public assets. In conclusion, it emphasizes the potential role played by best practice awards in the public sector.
