The agendas of research into decision-making in organizations suggest a focus on the subjective aspects of the decision- making processes, such as managers’ and entrepreneurs’ values and life experience. They also suggest the adoption of methods that surpass the limitations of the most frequently used research designs to understand the subjective aspects of individual decision-making. Based on these agendas, this article proposes the use of the Life History method as a possibility to investigate the influence of the individual’s values and life experiences in the decision process. The paper presents an illustrative case in order to demonstrate the possibilities of the method. In this sense, the main contribution of this paper is to show how the Life History method could contribute to a qualitative study of individual values and life experience in the organizational decision-making process.

Sustainability has become an increasingly popular topic in administration research projects, with a great number of researchers trying to understand and apply it to the corporate world. The general objective of the present study consists of investigating the theoretical perspectives of scientific production on sustainability in administration present in the annals of the Anpad Meeting and in the “Revista de Gestão Social e Ambiental”, over an eight-year period. The research encompasses the characteristics of authorship, methodological procedures and theoretical groundwork, as well as the qualitative characteristics of the selected articles. It is a qualitative study, characterized as descriptive research, with the application of bibliometrics and content analysis. 103 articles, published in the Anpad Meeting (annual editions, from 2003 to 2010) and in the “Revista de Gestão Social e Ambiental” (published three times a year, from 2007 to 2010), were analyzed. The results revealed an increase in scientific production on sustainability, demonstrating this topic’s growing maturity. In a more punctual way, researchers identified a tendency towards co-authorship; methodological diversity, not limited to theories or pre-defined models; and a high incidence of proposals of models related to sustainability.

Interdisciplinarity revisited: analyzing interdisciplinary practice in one of Bahia’s management schools

This study aimed to examine interdisciplinary practice within teaching management in a Higher Education Institution, located in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Quali-Quanti triangulation of research methods was employed on the sole case study. Data collected through questionnaires was analyzed using descriptive statistical measures and analysis of Cronbach’s alpha as a measure of reliability of the scale applied. Data from the interviews were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results show that teachers and students believe in the contribution of interdisciplinary teaching to improved learning processes, the development of students’ systematic, analytical and critical thinking, and a broadening of their technical and interpersonal skills. For the case in question, it was, therefore, concluded that even without an explicit proposal based on organizational policies, and with all the difficulties inherent to the implementation process and structure required for the development of activities – interdisciplinary teaching shows itself as a tool able to improve student learning and performance, demonstrating the relevance of its use in higher education.

Value cocreation with students: analyzing social influence and engagement with the discipline as antecedents of student feedback

It is only natural that educators of management topics often analyze and speculate on classroom phenomena from the points of view prevalent in the field. One will observe that educators and researchers interested in the subject of services may read the classroom as a service environment that is highly propitious to value cocreation The presentstudy follows through in this line as it aims to analyze antecedents of students’ proactive behavior of providing feedback to the professor in order to promote improvement in higher education classroom experiences. Engagement with the discipline is assessed as a direct antecedent of the feedback construct, while constructs derived from the Social Influence Theory are assessed as precursors to cengagement. The results, analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques, show positive significant relations among the constructs, demonstrating that, in the classroom context, social processes affect the relationship between students and the academic discipline, and that such relationships are favorable to the behavior of collaborating toward improving the class.

The aim of this study was to identify how the Triple Helix concept is applied in the activities of the Caxias do Sul Society of Technology Incubation. To achieve this goal, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted at ITEC, the University of Caxias do Sul, Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Services of Caxias do Sul, Caxias do Sul City Hall and Comlink Electronic Equipments, one of the companies that was successfully incubated. Content analysis of the results showed that the agents act mainly through the provision of financial resources. Furthermore, the main benefits obtained by the University from this relationship are the return on investment in the form of registered patents, attracting new students and recognition as a technological, entrepreneurial and innovative university. The perceived benefits for the industrial sector are training and development for businesses and entrepreneurs, while the municipal government perceives the reduced number of businesses failing and the financial returns, in the form of taxes, as benefits. The findings show that the Triple Helix concept developed by Etzkowitz (2009) plays a cooperative and participatory role in the Technology Incubator, even though it could be applied to more segments of society.

The importance of entrepreneurship in Brazil has increased significantly over recent years and current studies address the topic from different perspectives. The role of youth in creating new business is already a reality, which is only expected to expand in the coming years. Incentives to entrepreneurship in universities can be observed in several ways, including: government action, private initiatives and schools with a growing number of courses and activities related to entrepreneurship. The objective of this research was to analyze the entrepreneurial profile of Business Administration students in a private college and student insight into the university environment. We sought to understand how students with different profiles and at different phases in the course evaluate the university environment in which they operate, seeking to understand possible implications for the educational institution. We adopted a quantitative research approach and the results were presented using descriptive statistics. The main result of the paper presents a tool for measuring students’ entrepreneurial profiles and potential, as well as for assessing the university environment in terms of entrepreneurship and its implications for teaching and learning in higher education institutions.
