This teaching case focuses on the challenges for the survival of the software localization company Ccaps Translation and Localization – localization of computer programs is to adapt them to different countries, languages, and cultures. The case was developed to target Business Administration and Production Engineering undergraduate or graduate students, particularly in the disciplines of strategy and innovation. The case allows students to apprehend the concepts of the Disruptive Innovation and the Organizational Ambidexterity theories. The former describes the impact and challenges that threaten Ccaps’ survival while the latter is a strategic tool to reach promising and viable alternatives to maintain the company healthy in the long run. The professor should guide the students through the critical analysis of Ccaps’ competitive environment and its current and future capabilities, exploring the inhibitor (problems and restrictions) as well as the enhancer (solutions and leverages) features.

Although the articulation between teaching and research is a constructive precept of the Brazilian university, there is a distancing between undergraduate students with a focus on teaching and graduate studies with a focus on research. Considering the potential that business game present for managerial education, allowing practice (under controlled risk and uncertainty) and research, within the precepts of the Management Laboratory, it is necessary to consider the use of this methodological proposal in different educational levels with aim to the integration of undergraduate and graduate students. Thus, the aim of this article is to understand the process of integrating students of different educational levels through business games. The study is qualitative, exploratory-descriptive, based on the experience of the discipline of Simulated Business Management in a graduate course, in a federal institution, in the southern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. During the application of the business game, graduate students were invited to join the undergraduate students matriculated in the discipline of Management Lab II, of the undergraduate course in Business Management. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview and later analyzed by content analysis. The results indicate that the integration between graduate and undergraduate students during the managerial experience provides the maintenance or improvement of the quality of social learning in business game. They also indicate that the articulation between teaching and research at different levels of education, through business games, can contribute to more virtuous relationship between undergraduate and graduate students.

Rigor-relevance gap between academic–practitioner relationships is a constant dilemma in the academic scenario. Considering the postgraduate matter, this essay deals with the role of professional master course in order to present some issues related to avoid the mentioned gap. The article stresses the resistance by the academy in accepting the importance of practitioner aspects in the elaboration of alternative ways of research, especially in the professional master courses related to areas such as accounting and business. The interventionist research is discussed like an option to promote the development of practitioner ways of teaching and researching, considering the role of professional master programs, assuming that the empirical field promotes effective learning. The article propose that government departments such as CAPES should concentrate efforts in order to mitigate the rigor-relevance gap, as well as the dissemination of professional master research results, assuming the crucial role in marketing scenario, organizations and society.

Since the last decade, the use of History has been consolidating as a legitimate perspective in research in the field of Administration in general and in Organizational Studies in a more specific way. However, in spite of the maturation, this type of research still needs to be explained more about concepts and procedures that allow the operationalization of Historical research within the field of Administration. In this sense, this article aims to discuss the paths of Historical Research in Administration as a research method, aiming to elucidate the concept of historical research and historical method. In order to reach this goal, we seek to revisit the historical research in administration and then discuss three main guiding concepts of historical research: historical fact, sources and historical documents and historical operation, inserted within a path and methodological operationalization considering the different stages of historical research and its particularities. With this discussion, we intend to open the way for researchers in the area of administration to assume a critical and reflexive action capable of breaking with traditional thinking that perceives organizations as static structures, regular and constituted from causal relationships whose universal laws and standards seek to explain and predict, historically, what happens in the social world.

The relevance of the study has been recognized as the main factor of rejection or acceptance of articles by journals editors. Thus, justifying the study in a clear and persuasive way is a preponderant knowledge for the researchers. However, despite the importance, the research manuals superficially treat the presentation of the relevance of a research. Thus, the objective of this article is to identify the types of arguments used to justify scientific research inAdministration. To obtain the answer, we used exploratory research implemented by mixed methods (concomitant triangulation). As a result, six types of arguments were identified for articles in the Administration area: authority arguments, scarcity, theoretical contribution, necessity, practical contribution and gap.

The Effect of Extracurricular Activities in the Development of Managerial Competences in Research Groups

The purpose hereof was to identify relations between extracurricular activities (AE) and the possession of managerial competences (CG) in Brazilian research groups (GP), with the use of the CG possession in GP scale developed by Freitas and Odelius (2017) in combination with issues related to the AE contributions for the development of CG in GP. The electronic questionnaire applied to 528 participants and submitted to descriptive statistics, the Kendall-tau b correlation analysis, and the Kruskal-Wallis test allowed us to infer that: 1) participating in research groups, scientific initiations, university extensions, internships, general professional performances, volunteer works, and consulting projects are correlated with the CG possession in all of its dimensions; 2) participating in a junior company was not proven as capable to significantly affect the CG possession in GP; and 3) there are significant differences in the mastery of CG, depending on the role played in the GP, the type of institution, the wide-ranging area of knowledge, the educational level and the experience period with academic researches. Finally, we present our conclusions, limitations, and schedule for future researches.
