Show Abstract
The objective of this research was to perform a statistical analysis in
order to classify business organizations’ management styles through
kmeans clustering. It is limited to addressing the authoritarian,
benevolent, consultative and participatory styles as proposed by Likert
(1975, 1979). A survey was conducted through a questionnaire with closed
questions answered by 111 company controllers of Valor 1000 magazine between the years 2000 and 2004, and K-means cluster analysis was used to classify the styles. It was found that 45.95% of the companies had participative management style, with occasional
application of penalties in case of nonachievement of targets; 29.73%
had consultative management style, also with possible penalties; 7.21%
had consultative management style with occasional application of
penalties and informal strategic planning; 9.01% had consultative style,
with no application of penalty or incentive criteria for managers; and,
finally, 8.11%, had benevolent style.
