Print and electronic media: an analysis from the perspective of customer value in product management

This study sought to understand the consumer behavior regarding the value generated by printed and electronic versions of a magazine, seeking to understand how the nature of the information provided about by these complementary product contribute to the loyalty and satisfaction of these consumers. The methodology applied and described throughout this paper, was based on a case study in a journal of the Brazilian market, using a conclusive approach. A sample composed by 487 magazine subscribers were surveyed and preliminary findings depict that the electronic version of the magazine, in isolation, it is still a low valued product to the readers. Moreover, it was found that the electronic version adds value to the printed version and is valued by most subscribers to the magazine printed. The electronic version appears as a complementary product to the printed product and not a replacement product. The study also showed that the hypothetical model of relationships between value, satisfaction and loyalty are consistent with theory showing reasonable correlation between these two product dimensions.

This article presents the use of patent mapping as a tool for strategic planning for innovation in industrial sectors. Methods for the analysis of intellectual property have gained importance in the scientific and corporative environment since the growth rate of patent applications increases at 5% per year. Additionally, the information contained in the patents is readily available in electronic databanks and more sophisticated data mining analysis tools are available to help in the interpretation of data. Patents are an excellent source of information on technological innovation since the detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of patents on a given topic over time allows identifying trends and patterns of technological change, and therefore having to some extent a predictive power for future positions. A sample survey conducted in the field of industrial paints is used to show that despite that existing automated analysis tools can help in interpreting the data, a final analysis by experts on the subject is suggested to confirm the trends, enabling its use in strategic planning.

Between other aspects, the innovations may be motivated by demands from the consumer (demand-pull), and by the needs and opportunities identified by the various departments of a business or by managers (technology-push). This article aims to carry out an analysis of the nature of radical and incremental innovations in rice’s agroindustries of small, medium and large (considering the volume of rice processed), using the model of the Value Chain of the author Michael E. Porter. To do so, first, was realized a search in literature about concepts of Innovation, Value Chain and Competitiveness. As study’s object was used the method of multiple cases to analyze qualitatively nine companies of rice. The results indicate that the companies of different sizes have priorities for investment in innovations of different natures. In terms of radical innovations, while small businesses are concerned with inbound logistics and infrastructure, the midsize prioritize investments in the processing of the product and the large aim innovations in marketing, sales and purchasing department, in other words, the innovations of a radical nature are located primarily in the primary activities of the Value Chain. As for innovations of incremental nature, they are in several departments, but mainly in support activities of Porter's Value Chain. It was concluded that the innovations made in the studied sector have their origin, primarily, in the demands from the market and institutional environment are, therefore, demand-pull type.

This work examined the relationships among the leaders' and project members individual competences, organizational routines/processes and technological innovation, through a case study in Electrolux do Brasil S/A, Curitiba/PR, in the period from 1999 to 2011, considering a total of 30 projects and their results in product innovation. Few studies analyze leadership competencies and its interaction with process on product innovation. The methodology used a longitudinal case study with multilevel and multimethod perspectives. The question that orientated the work was: How was the interaction between managerial competences and routines on performance innovation? Through multivariate statistics it was observed the interaction between organizational routines and individual competences. In a more specific way, the quantitative analysis don’t confirm the association between routines/processes and innovation performance, if they are taken isolated. However, we considered together, they influenced innovation performance. A qualitative analysis was conducted through interviews, observation and document analysis to understand how this interaction happened. The result reinforces a fundamental argument of dynamic capability theory: to sustain innovation capability, an organization must reconfigure its resources base through routines and leadership competencies, or competent managers, who allocate resources, conceive, improve process and routines and lead teams towards change.

In many situations, System Dynamics modelers have to capture attributes of items that are tracked in an aging chain. The outflow of items from the stocks in these chains usually depends on the attributes that are tracked in the co-flow. But these well known, classic models fail to account for a specific phenomenon, the screening of items. This study presents a new application of co-flows in aging chains: A co-flow that enables the process of screening, i.e. the process of either terminating or approving items depending on an attribute. Many possible applications are suggested. An application to product pipeline management is developed.

This study analyzes the innovation sector dimensions in the innovation radar of the micro and small sized firms (MSF) in Pernambuco State. The radar considers 13 dimensions in its composition, but it does not consider each sector characteristics. In carrying out of comparisons among different sectors features, it is important to consider each of them to give distinct weights to each dimension. Thus, a procedure called Sector Innovation Characteristic (SIC) and Sector Innovation Degree (SID) search in this study to establish a process to compare the innovation degree. The SIC allows normalizing the different dimensions of the innovation radar from specific sector for comparison effect between them. The SID normalizes the traditional method on the basis of the innovation dimensions, considering heterogenic sector aspects. The method is validated with application on eight sectors samples with 25 MSF of different sectors.

Information technology expenses and organizational efficiency: new evidence from the Brazilian banking sector

Although it is undeniable that information technology (IT) has deeply affected society, its effects are still under scrutiny. This article discusses the impact of IT expenses on the efficiency of the banking sector in Brazil. The novelty of this paper is that it encompasses a segmentation of the banking sector in order to assure that one of the assumptions of the empirical technique is not violated. The sample includes 37 banks that represent 70% of the National Financial System and that are convened into three categories: retailers, wholesalers and specialized in credit. Based on data envelopment analysis technique, the results show that IT expenses have distinct effects on the efficiency of the banking segments. The findings reveal that IT seems to be more influential in the retailing segment than it is in other studied segments.

Competition industry increasingly requires companies that need new alternatives in order to remain competitive in the market. Management tools help in sight communications, providing agility in solving problems bringing benefits to companies. The present study aims to demonstrate the deployment of a dynamic, standardized and effective visible management tools in order to enhance the effectiveness of the spread of information in a plant of the largest industries of the Brazilian textile sector, aiming to make the company more competitive in the global market. This type of research is exploratory, descriptive and evaluative, with the mode of action research investigation. The Data were collected through unstructured interviews, document analysis and observation. After four months of implementation of management tools to view, we noticed a 40% reduction in the number of number of patrols made by supervisors on production lines, 61% reduction in the time machine downtime and increase of 68% in daily productivity. Another important result of the study showed improvement in communication between employees, less failure in the process of production and better monitoring by management.

There are expectations among experts that demographers global human population reaches the number of 9.4 billion over the next 50 years. This phenomenon will imply a series of consequences, especially when representing the need for additional land, so if all the food produce this population. It is estimated that this amount of consumer mouths will require the order of 109 acres in cropland, an area roughly the size of Brazil. Moreover, there is geographically the additional quantity of earth globe with the necessary quality that can represent the expansion of agricultural activities given the current patterns of production and consumption. Therefore, some of the alternatives to achieve the maintenance of food security, as well as to balance food prices are already far beyond the process of intensification of production. And one of the possible alternatives are vertical farms, a model of sustainable food production involving the junction of the rural with the urban. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the economic viability of the Canadian model of vertical farm in order to ascertain their economic gains and its amplitude sustainable. The method used was the "Non-Traditional Investment Criteria", by condition observatory participant. The results presented as a model feasibly economical and sustainable, as well as the flattening of innovative supply chains.

The objective of this paper is to identify the conditions and the potential for improving the efficiency, efficacy, and effectiveness of the ideas program management in organizations by reporting an experience of structuring processes and tools related to generating ideas for innovation at the banco de desenvolvimento do estado do espírito santo (bandes). We seek to understand why it is important to systematize routines and tools for generating ideas for innovation in organizations. Since 2006, with the creation of institutional innovation management (gerin), bandes has focused on systematic routines and tools for innovation management. In 2008, bandes implemented mechanisms to stimulate the innovative process, such as the innovation portal (whose main element is the ideas bank) and the bandes innovation award. The goal was to encourage employees to propose ideas and suggestions that could improve bandes’ internal processes. The primary conclusion is that the bandes suggestion system is still in the learning and maturation process. Furthermore, systematic routines and tools for innovation in bandes have proved to be an important contribution to the improvement of its internal processes and as a channel of communication and employee participation .

This paper aims to identify the relation among the constructs Ecological Concern, Ecological Affection and Consumer Behavior for green cosmetic products. In this sense, women from Ribeirão Preto – SP were researched, since they are the potential consumers for cosmetic products, which totalizes a sample of 500 cases. Exploratory factor analysis was applied in order to identify latent dimensions and correlation analysis was conducted in order to acquire if relations among the constructs are significant. Results show the constructs Ecological Concern and Ecological Affection have statically significant relation with Consumer Behavior construct. Results also offer an additional comprehension of the factors which affect purchase decision making process.

U innovation coefficient. Proposal for analyzing barriers to innovation. Results from 200 Colombian companies

This paper describe the tool "U Innovation coefficient" and the results that have been obtained in a sample of 200 companies from the regions of Antioquia, Quindío, Risaralda, Santander-Colombia. Currently, about 550 companies of Colombia, Mexico and Chile have used the tool and calculated the U Innovation coefficient in the low, medium and high ranges, from a high measurement to indicate that there are few barriers to innovation, up to a low indicator, which shows many barriers. The sample corresponds to a random selection of companies that they used the tool, between September 2011 and March 2013. This time, it was possible to measure the 'U' coefficient to determine whether there is any difference between the 4 regions by areas or departments and determine the range in which these regions lie, in terms of U Innovation coefficient.

This paper aims at describing and analyzing the dynamics of technological production of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). For this purpose, we used data of deposits of patent or utility model made by the firm and its subsidiaries, in the period from 1971 to 2009. We analyzed the temporal evolution, focus and collaboration network in technological production of the firm. The choice by CSN is justified by being one of the main Brazilian industries, in a strategic area for economic development, and whose competitiveness has intensified in recent years. From the understanding of its technological profile by patents, it can be more effective to establish guidelines for the management of innovation and intellectual property. The analysis of the data collected in the base FAMPAT, using Questel Orbit, identified a greater emphasis on internal development and two distinct patterns. The first refers to the pre-privatization period, where there is a greater amount of deposits. And the second, post -privatization, from 1993, in which there is a sudden drop in this procedure.

This article aims to contribute to a policy of innovation management. For it shows the influence of the practices of open innovation in the exploration of knowledge for value creation in highly complex environments under conditions of uncertainty and unpredictability. The research was conducted in the light of theoretical clippings and implementation of a survey to specialists, with knowledge about the investigated object, selected for technical and scientific criteria. The survey was addressed to high tech industries in Brazil. Data were extracted by means of an array of trial in which experts issued their judgments about the variables investigated. Multicriteria analysis, artificial neural networks and neuro technology: To reduce subjectivity in the results achieved, the methods were used. The produced results were satisfactory, validating the proposal.
