Both, in Europe and Latin America, SMEs are the most important source of job creation and development in increasingly knowledge based and turbulent economies. To sustain competiveness SMEs have to overcome the challenges of growth in ever more competitive markets. This requires to develop “dynamic capabilities” to integrate new knowledge, technology and competencies for qualitative and sustainable growth. Based on an analysis of selected challenges of growth, this paper presents the methodology 'Learning to Grow', which has been successfully implemented in German SMEs and is being transferred to Brazil. The first results of its application in Santa Catarina State are reported in this paper. The research is part of an ongoing research project funded by the European Union “Sustainable competitiveness of SMEs in turbulent economic and social environments” carried-out by Engineering and Knowledge Management Program (EGC) in the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina - Brazil, Universidad Nacional de Rosario - Argentina, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid - Spain and Wiesbaden Business School - Germany.

The objective of this study is to identify the beliefs technical-administrative staff of a public university hold in relation to competence based-management as a new model for people management to be implemented. The research was conducted with 16 technical and administrative employees participating in a course for raising awareness on personnel management based on competence. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. For data analysis, all interviews were analyzed, and their main parts were grouped into categories which were created based on the responses of the participants and interpreted based on the adopted methodology. The main results show that the beliefs of the participants were positive regarding the implementation of the new personnel management. The main beliefs were related to the promotion of training for skills development, appreciation and relocation of people according to their skills. The awareness course conducted in a positive way presupposes favorable beliefs regarding the model.

This paper aims at promoting a review and critique of models of knowledge between technique and technology considering its applicability as science. It was carried out considering two timelines: the modern and the contemporary. We start with the argument on how these models of instrumental knowledge are considered regarding their purpose for mankind . In our approach they represent the basis that sustains society in order to meet the needs of human evolution. The study is divided in two parts: the first one examines the elements technique and technology as they refer to their concept, progress and their implications; the second, justifies how the ethical category arises as a point of balance between technique and technology via technoethics; the argumentation proposes an effective tool for a new understanding of virtue and progress in man´s actions.

In 2006 a research with State Organizations of Agricultural and Livestock Research was carried out in 17 of the 27 Brazilian states. As a result of this work, a profile of each one of the Organizations and a profile of the whole system with the all its 17 members was established. This enabled the development of reconstruction Programs for that system with National Government funding. This paper offers an overview of the methodology, developed by a team of specialist , and which was used by those organizations to establish strategic management programs. These programs focus on five main points: (i) research (ii) infrastructure required (iii) management training (iv) transfer of technology (v) institutional cooperation. The conceptual basis was taken from the ideas of Mintzberg(1994) regarding the principles of the strategy; from John Roberts (2004) in what refers to the characteristics of modern business; and from Norton and Kaplan (1997) in regard to the importance of result indicators. The participation of regional institutions and their clients in all phases of the development of those programs was a landmark of the process.

This article presents specific questions regarding consumer services from the point of view of marketing services. It is a field research of quantitative nature and it tried to identity, through the application of questionnaires, how consumers in the municipality of São Miguel do Oeste (SC) evaluate the services offered to them by sales people of local stores. Indirectly, the research also had as an objective to discover what consumers expect from this service. In a broader perspective, the research aimed at understanding and evaluating human interactions and consumption relations from the point of view of consumer service. The research pointed out that the level of satisfaction of consumers regarding services offered by the local retail businesses is good; but many of the interviewed ( between 30% to 37%) stated that the level of services is only regular. This result needs to be stressed as it indicates that consumers of all ages are looking for something more when they are shopping. Besides, it also signals that businesses still need to improve the processes of their relationshjip with clients.

The role of women in stores in a shopping center: a comparative study in relation to the role of women in commerce street stores

This article shows the results obtained in the Project for Scientific Initiation (PIC) at Senac College in Tubarão (SC) in 2012, whose purpose was to establish the profile of women who work in stores located in a shopping center (Farol Shopping). Next, we carried out a comaparative study between data achieved in PIC Senac 2011, where we investigated the role of women who work in stores in commerce street downtown Tubarão. The differences between these two types of businesses (shopping centers and stores in commerce streets) was presented. Questions related to gender differences (cultural and in the labor market) were also pointed out.Regarding methodology, the article is based on bibliographical research and diagnostic research carried out at Farol Shopping Mall. The results showed that collaborators working in shopping centers are between 20 and 25 years old, and they are younger than women working in stores in commerce streets which were analysed in 2011. Among managers, the reality is the same: they are between 20 and 30 years old and they generally have a higher level of education and, also, they have been working as managers for a shorter period than women managers of stores in commerce streets who were interviewed in the previous research.

Information technology is currently directly embedded in trade in general. However it is in e-commerce that its application is more direct. Because this type of trade is still not very common and because it presents safety problems and disparity of information, consumers buy products and services sparingly. This study aimed to map the use of technology for e-commerce in the region of the city of Blumenau (SC), through the study of collective buying on web environments. The study that was carried out during the months of October and November 2012 applied "sensus" qualitative research on collective buying sites in the region of Blumenau. The results show the profile of buyers and traders, the main products offered, sold and sought after, forms of payments, guarantees and security offered by sites among others. The results showed that food and power products, cosmetics and travels are among the items most offered and sold in the region, which also shows the main types of consumers. The results also pointed out that the products and services offered are still restricted. As a result, this kind of commerce is not very usual in the region. However, by increasing the variety of products offered as well as improving security and reliability in this type of trade, e-commerce can turn into a more attractive and consolidated option in the coming years.
