In the context of the cooperation among universities, companies and the government, thegeneration of innovation happens by a process of scientifi c knowledge transfer to companies and markets. However, good research results are not enough to begin the patenting and licensing process; it is necessary to demonstrate the viability of transforming it into innovation. In this sense, the interactive vision of science and technology, in terms of the relationship between “understanding and use”, and between the categories of basic and applied research, derived from the objectives of the scientifi c research – offers a different idea of the connections between basic science and technological innovation and for the formulation of scientifi c policiess. Based on this discussion, the contribution of this article is to identify the kind of research carried out and to understand the means of cooperation among university, government and the productive sector, in which RENORBIO (Rede Nordeste de Biotecnologia – Northeast Network of Biotechnology) is inserted. The qualitative method of a case study is used. The data analysis is based on the thematic analysis technique, which is a Content Analysis technique. Advantages are noted and limitations and challenges are recognized in the cooperative relationships under analysis, in particular the need to make basic research agendas inspired by use, with an eye on the business sector and the market.

In order to provide support to public health initiatives in Brazil, Evandro Chagas Clinical Research Institute (IPEC/FIOCRUZ) endeavours to integrate clinical research, technological development, education and the production of services in the fi eld of infectious diseases. To assess the performance of this model, in this work we evaluate eight IPEC Integrated Actions ( PAIs) in the period 2002-2008, using Data Envelopment Analysis – DEA for the calculation of an effi ciency border and to suggest the required changes in operation plans. Markovian analysis indicated the number of ineffi cient PAIs in the long run. Conclusions were in the sense that: the new format has disclosed the existence of effi cient organisational paths; DEA models may be used to routinely follow up performance, to reinforce commitment and to promote pro-efficiency solutions; and a smooth tendency of effi ciency loss in the long run could be identifi ed.

The roles of Human Resources (HR) are being questioned academically, as well as within organizations. Defi ning roles that are suitable to this area, given the changes occurring in the global work environment, reveals the problem of positioning HR as a strategic partner in organizations (ULRICH, 1998). Traditionally defi ned as a task executor, HR has diffi culties performing according to the strategic discourse being presented nowadays. This article shows the results of a survey carried out with 264 management students at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. Its objective is to identify and discuss the Social Representations (GUARESCHI, 2007) of these students as regards the area of HR. Using cluster analysis, clusters of students with different concepts of HR were identifi ed, and it was also shown that most of the students lacked clarity about HR roles and the implications of HR aligned with business strategies.

Family businesses have specific characteristics which are the product of the interaction between family and business. To comprehend these two dimensions, it is sometimes necessary to use different methodological approaches to make the comprehension of such interaction possible. Thus, this paper investigates the dynamics between family and business by applying the historiographic method and the genogram technique. The results indicate that the application of these two methods extends the possibilities of comprehension about the interaction between family and business. The main contribution of this paper is of a methodological nature, because it indicates a qualitative research route that can be followed by other researchers interested in studying the interaction family-organization. It also may contribute to the advance of family business research, especially concerning the synergies and confl icts generated through the socially constructed relationships between family members and the family business.

This article analyzes the relationship between hedonic and utility purchase values, satisfaction, word-of-mouth and intention to repurchase through a model developed for this purpose. The study was motivated by the growing debate about the infl uence of the store environment on customer satisfaction. The hypotheses were tested through a survey of 400 interviews with buyers at a chain store of building materials in the state capital. The results indicated that the purchase price of utility positively infl uenced all outcome variables and the hedonic retail purchase price infl uenced only word-of-mouth and repurchase intention. The infl uence of the purchase utility on satisfaction, word-of-mouth and intention to repurchase was greater than the infl uence of the hedonic value of purchases. These fi ndings may indicate, though not guarantee, that a good variety, ready availability of goods, good location, opening times and competitive prices result in satisfi ed and loyal customer.

The purpose of the study is to verify the relationship between structured cognition patternsand strategy practices. 60 evangelical church congregations were investigated using a surveya. The data underwent Cluster Analysis and two groups with different values and Product Strategy were identifi ed but with similar Relationship Strategies. The clusters were denominated Reactive Traditionalists and Contemporary Prospectives. The fi rst group values quality, reputation and tradition and it is less active in Product Strategy. The second cluster pays attention to more modern values associated to the instrumental logic of management, and this group is more aggressive in its Product Strategy practices. The implications of such results are shown at the end of the article.

Quality of Reporting Methodological Procedures in National Publications in the Area of Business Administration: the case of structural equation modelling

The aim of this research is to evaluate the quality of the description of the methodological procedures reported in articles that employed structural equation modeling (SEM), including confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis, which were published in RAE, RAUSP, Read, O&S, RAC and RAE-eletrônica journals between 2001 and 2010. A checklist for evaluating the articles was derived from the literature and was validated with 33 experts. The main results of the analysis of the 68 articles found were: an inability to replicate studies due to a lack of information and the use of exploratory research strategies without further validation. On the other hand, justifying the use of SEM use and the explanation of the theoretical implications of research fi ndings are aspects that were fully met by the papers. The checklist itself is an important byproduct of this research, given that new lines of research regarding the application of the SEM method are derived from it and it can also be used as a teaching tool in research methodology courses.

Resistance to the Implementation of a Payroll System in the Public Administration: a multi-case investigation

Personal, technological, social and political issues have triggered resistance to information systems within public administration. Thus, this research investigates the implementation of a payroll system in the public administration using a multiple case study. The study investigates the type of reaction the civil servants have to the system within their organizational realm, as well as whether or not the system was accepted by them. The article addresses two case studies, namely one at the executive level of a Brazilian state (case A) and the other at the justice department of another Brazilian state (case B). Both states contracted the  development of the same payroll system, whereby enabling comparison between these two endeavors. While in case A the system was about to be fully implemented after overcoming several hurdles, in case B the system implementation was halted as it was not accepted by the organization where it was to be implemented. The research uses a theoretical frame that binds resistance factors accrued from persons, the system, as well as from the socio-political interaction between the system users and the organizational environment. The article identifi ed distinct types of resistance behaviors, the interrelationship among them and their transformation throughout the implementation of the system, which led to contrasting final outcomes for each case.
