We aim to analyze the economic and political determinations which have instigated the movement towards a class consciousness among an unemployed population mediated by the formation of a social movement, the Unemployed Workers Movement (MTD). We use the Marxist debate about social classes (SC) and class consciousness using the studies of Iasi (2006). The research method used in the present work is characteristic of the dialectical-materialist approach, which is based in three assumptions: contradiction, totality and historicity. The condition of the unemployed which fostered the movement for group fusion (Sartre’s discussion), was the result of the new organization of production that has caused both to the working class and the movement of regressivity in the advanced progressivity as regards the possibilities of organization beyond the Trade Unions. The SC are imposed at the same time as they are imposed by the concrete action of their subjects, in a way which is required by capitalism, but only take place while practical mediations, while contingent mediations.

Selective placement of mentally challenged people in organizations: a qualitative analysis

Selective placement is a legal way to hire people with intellectual disabilities. However, it is a recent practice and is subject to many contradictions. This article discusses the selective placement of people with intellectual disabilities in the labor market and it presents a critical analysis of this type of inclusion. It is based on a qualitative study of people with such disabilities, their families and employers in six cities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The survey results indicate that the process of selective placement occurs in three different ways: (1) small-scale production carried out in educational institution (2) productive activity of the contractor performed in the educational institution, and (3) productive activity performed on the contractor’s premises. All three waysare considered valid, not only for contributing to the preparation of the individual for the labor market, but also for their social and economic benefi ts. The article discusses the practical, legal and theoretical concepts related to selective placement, indicating the need to continue this debate.

Burnout syndrome and social support at work: the perception of the nursing professionals at public and private hospitals.

This study investigated nurses’ perceptions of the infl uence of social support for Burnout syndrome. A survey of 231 nursing staff at four public and private hospitals in the central part of the Rio Grande do Sul was carried out. The results reveal that nurses suffer moderately from the syndrome and those at public hospitals suffered more and had less support at work when compared to those working at private hospitals. Moreover, using multiple regression, in the public sector the model of Emotional Exhaustion was foreseen by the informational social support and confi dence factors, in 31% explained variance. In the private sector, the personal accomplishment dimension, was explained in 23% by the factors informational social support, confi dence and clarity and agility of the information, showing the infl uence of social support at work for the Burnout Syndrome.

In the last three decades, issues concerning the role and infl uence of business social  networks have sprung up as the main focus of debate amongst academics and professionals from the Business Area. Although there have been many theoretical backgrounds bounded to Network Theory, the Actor-Activities-Resources model (AAR model) developed by IMP-Group has been mostly adopted in a wide array of organizational contexts. Bearing this in mind, the AAR model was used to investigate how business opportunities are identifi ed by the CEOs of High-Tech Firms. This is an exploratory investigation that follows a basic qualitative orientation. The data collection was taken from in-depth interviews with CEOs. Content analysis was used as the interpretation method for qualitative interviews in this paper. The main finding of this research points to a collective dynamic developed within business network relationships. Besides this, sensemaking principles are deeply embedded in the praxis of CEOs within such relations. Theoretical refl ections on these fi ndings are discussed. Implications for marketing theory and practice, as well as directions for future research, are considered.

Private pension funds in Brazil: an analysis of determining factors in their expansion from a managerial perspective.

Private pension funds, of interest to millions of Brazilians, are characterized by retirement plans limited to a certain group of people.This paper aims to identify the determinants for the extension of such private pension funds from the perspective of managers thereof. Nineteen managers of pension funds and actuarial consulting fi rms in Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were interviewed. Such funds managed R$ 141.01 billion in 2008, representing 33.64% of the resources in the system in Brazil. Tthe data treatment used was the analysis of the semantic-pragmatic meaning (Mattos, 2006), which seeks to understand the meanings of context assumed or involved in each response or emerging from the relationship of these responses. From the results, we highlight important considerations and proposals: the issue of pension awareness, new tax incentives, the use of part of FGTS and fl exible legislation to foster the growth of welfare in the country.

The study of socially marginalized groups, such as gays and blacks, among others, is highly relevant since these minorities are virtually denied the status of members of modern consumer society (BARBOSA, 2006). This study aims to investigate how possession of body is used by gay men to deal with the stigma of homosexual identity. The study is based on participant observation in a group of gay men in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as well as 20 semistructured interviews with gay men conducted between 2005 and 2008. The results suggest that: (i) the body is construct, and as such is sculpted and manipulated according to the esthetic standards of gay culture (ii) the group studied seeks an ideal of hyper-masculinity and (iii) the meanings associated with the body are used as a form of demarcation in gay culture. These results reveal a wide range of services linked to this consumption of the body by the group. The body is used as an “insignia” allowing each person to control, discipline, domesticate and constrain his body to attain “good form”, or the form required by the group.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Brazilian scientific production on family businesses, assessing articles published between 1997 and 2009. We conducted a literature review, focusing on the identification of patterns that highlight some key aspects of the current status of the field, such as: family business concept; research themes; research approach; research method; research strategy; data collection and data analysis techniques. The results indicate the existence of an emerging fi eld in the Brazilian academic scenario, which has shown progress in recent years, particularly in terms of an increase in published papers. Family business research plays a potential role as it becomes a relevant academic alternative for research production and for the development of theories in the area of Management and Organizational Studies in Brazil.

The aim of this paper is to discuss new forms of production, commercialization and  distribution of music as possibilities of resistance to hegemonic practices traditionally used by major labels, through the presentation of some cases in the Brazilian music industry. The crisis that the  music industry has been facing since the late 90’s and which is closely linked to changes in the nature of technology has made new alternatives possible to produce and commercialize the music.. Examples of music-related organizations that offer some degree of resistance to the dominant structural model understood by the authors as organizations of resistance, are  presented and analyzed. The conclusion is that the organizational forms exemplified present specifi c structural features, which allow us to consider them as forms of resistance to the business model of organization.

The aim of this study is to understand the vision that managers have about worker  commitment with the organization exploring the relevance of treating affective and instrumental dimensions in the same construct, as proposed Meyer and Allen (1991). A description was made of the elements that make up the schematic concept of employee commitment and the burden of affective and instrumental elements that constitute it. The schematic elements were identifi ed by assigning a verbal label to two different profi les of committed worker, the spontaneous response to questioning about what commitment is and its main characteristics and the choice of features available in the literature on the issue of commitment. Eight managers working for two companies in a medium to large metropolitan region of Salvador-BA participated in the study (four from each organization). The data underwent content analysis and the results were reported with the use of cognitive mapping techniques. It was concluded that the managers surveyed associate the concept of affective commitment to their affective base and consider tinstrumental commitment as the antithesis of commitment. Extra effort and additional contribution are considered important for the worker to be regarded as committed.
