Product differentiation and innovation in the food industry: the case of functional foods in Brazil

Innovation on became part of the research and production agenda of different sectors and represents a reflection of a society increasingly based on knowledge. In recent years, this subject has been reproduced in agribusiness, where the actions of several agents have been guided by concerns not only economic, but also by the demand for foods with beneficial properties for health. The main question of this research and its purpose consists in a preliminary study to look at this scenario, featuring the food industry in Brazil and analyzing the process of differentiation/integration of functional foods in this context. Methodologically, in an exploratory-descriptive study was held: study of theories of innovation, stakeholders, and the differentiation strategy; reading of recent publications and survey of statistical and documentary data for characterization of the largest food industry in Brazil, and their actions in innovation with emphasis on functional foods. The results indicate a growing market concentration, where the 20 largest companies (based on only five states) have half the sector’s revenues. In relation to functional products, it is observed that became market phenomenon, through an induced demand being met only by companies that have economic and technological conditions. In the group of 20 largest companies in the Brazilian food industry, it was found that 10 have adopted a differentiation strategy, entering into the functional food segment, which shows a trend in which innovation occurs through incremental actions.

The struggle for land in Brazil is recognized by the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST), as one of the largest organization of social movements in Brazil. The movement began in decades of 1970/80 and from this season, has become a phenomenon known in the world acquiring several connotations (political, social, economic). Among the structures adopted in MST settlements are Agricultural Production Cooperatives in which there is the collectivization of production factors (land, capital, labor). The aim of this paper is to describe the role played by women in the Agricultural Production Cooperative named 30 de Outubro. The work results from a bibliographical and documentary research and field research. The study was conducted Settlement 30 de Outubro, in Campos Novos (SC). Cooperated women and some men were interviewed the. The study found that the woman participates in the cooperative both in planning and implementation activities, but there is still a space to be occupied, although there is movement in the sector of gender.

This paper aims to propose a process to support the management of an experimental farm, which is illustrated by a model in such a way as to enable the improvement of its management process. This is a case study, the source of data collection is of primary nature. The methodological approach is classified as qualitative and quantitative research and the logic is inductive and deductive. The intervention tool was used MCDA - C, which allowed us to identify, organize and measure the aspects judged necessary and sufficient to evaluate the context. The process developed and illustrated by a model allows the manager to view the performance profile of the experimental farm of the criteria he identified as relevant to the success of its management, highlighting its competitive advantages and vulnerabilities.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the concentration of agro-industrial chain swine in the West of Paraná State, Brazil. We used as methodology the collection of secondary data on the creation and agroindustrialization of swine, and locational quotient and locational Gini coefficient to identify the cities more specialized in this activity in the region. The swine has always been present in the productive activities in this region. In the 1970s it was one of the main economic activities. In the same year, this region was responsible for 29.15% of swine slaughtered and sold in Paraná State, and 6.48% in Brazil. In 1985 the participation of this region was 54.44% and 8.75% respectively. The data show that the State of Paraná showed significant growth of the activity of raising and slaughtering swine in recent decades, with 373% increase in the slaughter of swine from 1994 to 2008, with the main western region of Paraná State in this activity. In this region, the number of formal employees in the activity of swine grew 511.1%, and the activity of slaughter swine grew 364.6% between 1994 to 2008. Moreover, the results showed sufficient information to indicate that the slaughter industry, swine production is considered a cluster, with strong evidence for the existence of collective efficiency.

The purpose of this paper is to present a performance assessment framework for the working capital of a company in the Middle Port swine using the MCDA-C. This research was qualitative. The search strategy was used the case study. As for the means of research, this study was divided into two stages, an initial literature search was, and another end that was the documentary research and a questionnaire. During this work, withdrew to substantiate elements and compose this article, such as SWOT analysis (strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats), we arrive at the primary elements of assessment. In possession of the primary elements, grouped into five areas of interest, availability, Inventory, Accounts Receivable, Supplier, Supplier Capital, proposed a tree of views, depending on the model of the author Keeney (1992). And, to assist us in calculating the value functions rely on the help of software MacBeth. With the implementation of the MCDA-C there is the possibility of identifying and visualizing the performance of working capital of the company, from applications to the suppliers of capital. Allows you to identify points where intervention is most urgently needed improvements, where the results correspond to the items below “neutral” as well as maintaining good levels when it is in “excellent”. The research was performed at Aurolat Agroindustry – Milk Industrial Unit – Central Cooperative of the west of Santa Catarina State, through direct interview with the unit general manager; it aimed to know the existing transactions among agents, cooperatives, Aurolat Agroindustry and distributors. The research design includes an exploratory research using a case study, with a qualitative approach. Evidence of the study: in transactions among existing cooperatives, agribusiness and Aurolat and distributors, “uncertainty” is a characteristic. Regarding transactions with singular cooperatives, due to the weakness of variable raw material (supply, competition and perishability), and in the case of distributors, the issue of contracts continuity for both parties, where the interests must converge motivated by the profitability, it may generate good economic results for both the parties. In these transactions, the risks are minimized by the existence and implementation of contracts. Draws the attention, the transactions among Aurolat and its distributors in terms of opportunistic behavior, motivated by commercial relations (lower cost greater benefit) that should be harmonized with the cooperative principles, as well as in terms of “human capital” specificity, in what distributors are experts and know the entire consumer market with a strong tendency, whether there is a contract breach, to the client to remain faithful to the distributor more than to the industry. The studied transactions seem to have as great challenge, the search for harmony among different interests, i.e. transactions based on cooperative doctrinal principles (partnership) and commercial principles, based on transactions (equity). It is understood that further studies investigating, organizational strategies to reconcile the “coexistence” of transactions between cooperative organizations and non- cooperative organizations, aiming a relationship based on a systemic vision required at the agroindustrial milk system.
