Student perceptions, opinions and preferences are important for the academic environment as well as for instructors and educators. For this reason an evaluation was made in relation to the educational situation of didactic and evaluation methods used by the instructors, the interaction of students and instructors and instructor commitment and behavior. A questionnaire, with 60 affirmatives and answers structured by means of a Likert scale, was given to 213 students who were representative of a four year management course in a private university in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Factor analysis was used to evaluate the student opinions that revealed a preference for the structure and facility of instruction, evaluation strategies, course planning and learning strategies.

The interdependent relations that exist between the structure of an organization and the organizational strategies to be implemented were analyzed. A review was made of literature on strategy, strategic management and methods of implementing strategies appropriate for organization objectives. Traditional models of organization structures were then analyzed as well as the inherent strategic advantages and disadvantages. Then the approach of various authors to these interdependent relations was studied. It was concluded that although organizational strategy can be established by analyzing organization structure as well as the strong and weak aspects involved, this is not always feasible. With fast paced technologies and sharpening global competition, the best alternatives are flexible organization structures that may be quickly changed to attend strategies capable of insuring participation of the organization in the volatile environment.

The traditional mean-variance approach for building efficient portfolios was compared to the downside risk approach that substitutes variance of returns by semi-variance or another lower partial momentum of returns. Empirical investigation searched for efficient frontiers using both approaches and strategies for asset allocation which were simulated for comparison. The downside risk approach was shown to be superior in terms of efficiency when investors had asymmetric preferences related to risk. Further the strategy of minimizing downside risk effectively provided greater protection against losses when compared to the strategy of variance minimization, for asset allocation.

Justifications for interest on self-owned capital were shown to follow two tendencies among accountants and analysts. In one it may be a substitute for monetary correction in accounting for fiscal purposes. The second seeks to provide isonomic treatment between interest on self-owned capital and that of third parties. Differences between Brazilian tax authorities and the security and exchange commission on the subject were also identified. Some authors state that Law 9.430/96 made distribution of remunerative interest on selfowned capital as dividends, more attractive depending upon the nature of the beneficiary’s revenues. Finally, practical application of the pertinent Laws 6.404/76 and 9.249/95 in the publicly traded “Companhia Siderurgica Nacional”, “Metalúrgica Gerdau” and “Belgo-Mineira” steel companies between 2001 and 2003 revealed discrepancies in relation to tax and corporate legislation.

The relationship of manufacturers with the distribution channel is an essential activity that is becoming more critical as retailing tends to concentrate in large specialized companies. Relationship marketing with wholesalers and retailers can be a valuable tool if appropriately used. Circumstances where relationship marketing between manufacturers and retailers may contribute to improve relations as well as maximize the performance of manufacturers were investigated. Literature was reviewed on the subjects of relationship marketing and marketing channels. Field research included in depth interviews with manufacturers’ representatives and appliance retailer networks. Results show that relationship marketing may have a positive influence by contributing to better relations between manufacturers and retailers; however, effectiveness depends upon the conditions under which it is implemented.

Differentiation, as a successful competitive strategy, was analyzed in the “Sitio Vertentes” which grows conventional, hydroponic and organic vegetables in rural Pernambuco to distribute them in Metropolitan Recife. The focus was on better production, distribution and commercialization efficiency where technical and administrative actions added value and commercial advantages in supplying the higher quality vegetables demanded by customers with enhanced purchasing power. The technical fundamentals of this study are the basic concepts of competitive strategy.

The philosophy and models of the System of Compensation of administrators were analyzed to verify the degree of agreement with the good practice of corporate governance structure. The structure of corporate governance is made up of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, council members, CEO and the executive board. Literature reviewed disclosed only isolated aspects of governance and remuneration without any integrated format. Exploratory and descriptive methods were used for documentary research and field survey at the companies who had adhered to the differentiated levels of corporate governance of the São Paulo Stock Exchange (level 1, level 2 and new market). Conclusions showed that remuneration of the council member was reasonable without considering the variable component found in executive board. The organizations used short term indicators for the remuneration system and were already formalizing procedures. However, greater internal as well as external transparency is required to make these procedures more public.
