The relationship between Human Resources and sustainability as an emerging theme: a bibliometric analysis

In recent years, many researchers have focused their studies on the relationship between the areas of Human Resources (HR) and sustainability. Studies show that this relationship is an emerging topic, as well as a challenge for HR (HR DELPHI 2010; SHRM 2011; TRINDADE DA SILVA BARRETO et al. 2011). In an attempt to understand this relationship, this study seeks to answer the following questions: Is the relationship between HR and sustainability an emerging topic in the academic literature? And if so, what is the position taken by the national scientific production, compared with that of the international academic scenario? To this end, we performed a bibliometric study of the national and international literature over the past 11 years (2001-2011), analyzing 72 papers from 28 different published media: 12 national journals, one national event, and 15 international journals. It was evident that both the national and international literature are interested in studying this relationship; the first produced 37 papers, and the second 35. However, international studies have a more solid theoretical foundation. In general, Brazilian researchers use different references from international studies, and rarely publish internationally. Finally, it is understood that academic production involving HR and sustainability is increasing each year, and can be considered an emerging theme.

Organizational Sustainability-OS can be achieved through a balance of economic, environmental and social bases. We suggest a framework that links these sustainabilities in pairs, resulting in the following relationship phenomena: eco-efficiency (representing the economic and environmental bases), social and economic insertion (representing the economic and social bases), and social and environmental justice (representing the environmental and social bases). Organizational Attitude Theory (OAT) expresses a way of seeing and understanding organizational phenomena as processes. Based on OAT, we suggest that OS can be seen as an organizational attitude, which forms the basis of the organizational competencies, and enables the development of the OS. The role of the competence is to guide the management of sustainability, enabling actions with the intended organizational actions to be delimited and oriented. Considering OS as a broad process, eco-efficiency is highlighted, the objective of this work being to “explain ecoefficiency as a competence and as a structuring element of organizational sustainability. We carried out a qualitative case study in the automotive battery industry, which included interviews with managers linked to the production and environmental processes. This provided a better understanding of ecoefficiency as an organizational competence, and as part of organizational sustainability, as well as identifying competences related to ecoefficiency.

Comparative empirical study of the standard KMV and naïve KMV models in the Brazilian context

The paper investigates the behavior of one of the most important credit risk assessment models, the KMV, based on Merton’s (1974) theoretical formulation, in a sample of companies listed on the Ibovespa from 2001 to 2010. Besides the standard KMV performance, a variation of the KMV model, created by Bharath and Shumway (2008) - KMV naïve, was also evaluated for the same sample of companies. Through a sensitivity analysis, in which parameters of both methods were modified, the performance of the models was analyzed in different scenarios. A backtesting analysis was also performed, in which estimated default frequencies were compared with actual defaults of the companies. The results suggest that the naïve model, despite its simplicity, tends to overestimate the risks, indicating that in the case of Brazil, Merton’s standard model is more appropriate.

The theme of this study is digital social networks and social capital within the organizational context. Its concepts are outlined, in order to evaluate it in the business context, seeking to gather the latest research and offer research proposals based on these constructs. This objective was pursued through the literature review from research in international databases. In conclusion, it illustrates, theoretically, how to evaluate social capital in companies based on online social networks, their importance for competitive differentiation today, the potential benefits of this new context, and the possibility of effective technical measurement. Finally, suggestions are made for practical research in the context of public administration of companies whose target audience is young people, and technology-based companies, aiming at assessing social capital within online social networks online in order to gain competitive advantages.

This study assesses the quality management system of farms that produce organic food, located in the state of São Paulo. The technical procedure used to conduct this study was a case study. We studied two farms, both classified as average-sized properties, which produce organic fruits. It was observed that the rural enterprises studied had completely contrasting quality management practices. While one company aligned technical aspects with the management needs, the other prioritized technical aspects at the expense of organizational matters. At the end we propose a model of quality management for farms that produce organic foods, based on a strategic alignment of consumer and process.

Corporate entrepreneurship brings to organizations a new working philosophy, in which the individual ability of each employee can be more effectively developed. Corporations that adopt an intrapreneurial culture will be effective in their market, with intrapreneurs generating innovations and competitive advantages. In this context, this study seeks to characterize intrapreneurial behavior among employees of two universities of Santa Catarina, Brazil, linking it to five organizational factors: managerial support, freedom in the workplace, available time, uncertainty in tasks, and rewards. It also seeks to measure organizational identity to determine if this variable is a mediator in the relationship between the factors and intrapreneurial behavior. Analysis of the data involved the use of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equations Modeling (SEM), seeking to evaluate the relationships proposed between the organizational factors. The results shown that the factors are positively related with intrapreneurial behavior. In regard to the relationship between the factors and organizational identity, the strongest relationship was found with managerial support, followed by freedom in the workplace. The other factors showed a poorer relationship in the coefficients. Finally, the hypothesis that organizational identity is a mediator between organizational factors and intrapreneurial behavior was not supported. The theme in question is very important for providing information and support that can help managers in the strategic decision-making process, as well as increasing knowledge of practices of corporate entrepreneurialism.

The need for service companies to survive in a demanding competitive environment requires the innovation and construction of new business models, a theme that has not been overlooked by researchers. To further knowledge of the subject, this research seeks to understand how innovation occurs in a business in the area of supplemental health, especially in relation to its stakeholders. The method used was a single case study developed in one of the industry’s leading companies, through an in-depth interview with the chief director of the company, and the application of a questionnaire with employees involved in the innovation process. The data gathered were triangulated and interpreted using content analysis. The results led us understand that the main model of innovation is incremental, focusing on dimensions of service delivery and technology. The process is accomplished through multidisciplinary teams, and the leading indicators are financial ones. Innovation is reactive, and is considered by the company as critical to its survival. The formal process of developing new services occurs through multidisciplinary project teams.

Chuveletro is an industrial company founded in the early 1980s, that produces residential showers and has a monopoly on sales to electrical stores in the region in which it operates. Since the entry of Eletroveiro to this market, Chuveletro has seen a significant loss of its market share, and urgent measures must be taken if the company is to survive. The purpose of this case study is to propose analysis and reflections and relationships on the themes of planning and strategy, competitive intelligence, organizational change, knowledge management, client value, and process improvement within the company. The use of this case study is recommended for the Business Processes and Strategic Management disciplines of undergraduate courses.
