Budgeting practices: a study on Brazilian hotel companies

This study aims to explore the budgeting practices in the hotel companies of Brazil’s main tourist centers. The justification is oriented by the number of foreign tourists received by the top ten Brazilian tourist destinations, which reaches 95% of the country. Another motivation is the lack of research on hotel companies in developing countries, and it should also be considered that Brazil will host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, which requires a suitable hotel structure to receive a large number of athletes and tourists. Thus, in order to achieve the purpose of this study, surveys were sent to the hotels associated with the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry (ABIH), with replies by 40 hotel companies. Descriptive statistics were applied to the results, in order to improve the basis for discussions. The results indicate that most of the hotels adopt corporate budgeting with bottom-up as main budgeting process. Research shows that budgets are developed, more frequently, using the results from previous years and economic indicators. In the performance evaluation, the comparative analysis, the analysis of the causes of deviations and adequacy measures are often applied. The analysis of variance is primarily directed at controlling costs/expenses, identifying potential problems and providing feedback for the next period.

This study sought to analize how the changes caused by the growth of the company affect the decisionmaking process, focusing on the transition from small to medium businesses. We attempted to fill the existing gap over this period of transition between small and medium firms, especially in the aspects addressed by the logical Causation and Effectuation, described by Sarasvathy (2001). The research was qualitative and exploratory in nature and makes use of the method of case studies through interviews with entrepreneurs, their successors and managers in the hospitality industry, which is a service sector that has had great visibility and growth in recent years. At the end of the survey, it was concluded that the transition from small to medium business affects decisions to i) increase the formalization of processes, ii) there is a small delegation of powers, iii) there is a greater distancing of the employees and senior management, iv) there is a greater concern with training of staff, v) a support team for decision making is established, vi) there is concern about the long term, vii) rational aspects are considered for decision, viii) the responsibilities become clearer and ix) more autonomy is delegated to employees.

Principles and organizational values: the question of training and the excellence of the hotel services. A case study in the JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro

Human capital should be seen as one of the most valuable assets to hotel businesses that aim for offering excellence, hospitality, efficiency and helpfulness to their business segment. In this sense, this paper has as main objective the exposure of principles and values that support the logic of workers’ capacity and training process in hotel ambience, seen here as a fundamental precept to structure a service and a treatment based on excellence values. Exposed it, this academic research has its methodological foundation on quantitative and qualitative analysis presented by a case study - JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro - seeking to exhibit an evaluation of training policies and their effects on excellence in service, in order to demonstrate how their guidelines reflect on hotel business operational and managerial results. Thus, the sample universe, guided by the perception of 26 workers on organizational training activities, allowed the following considerations: (1) there is, through different departments of this organization, the recognition of the importance of this process and its inferences on organizational results, conditioning to ensuring excellence of services; (2) the logic, the frequency and the commitment to the values presented by this guidelines allow a greater security and reliability on human resource, encouraging its proactivity. Finally, it will be discussed how such issues need to be seen as competitive advantages, able of offering its employees a "know how" essential for satisfaction, enchantment and loyalty of a hotel demand.

Motivations, image dimensions and affective qualities of places: the choice of place and photos in tourism and leisure travels

Tourism is dependent on aspects that motivate people to travel and what they expect to receive. This study aimed to explore the dimensions of the images and affective qualities of places in tourism and leisure travel photos. Aimed also to identify the motivations that influence the choice of tourist destination. We conducted two studies. The first was a survey wtih 232 people who made tourism or leisure travel in the last three years. The second stage of the research, was performed by application of 12 interviews with leisure or tourism travel consumers. The results show that the affective image, the atmosphere and leisure are the most determinant dimensions in the choice of destination. It was also found that feelings of respondents in relation to your photo turn to the affective and emotional field.

Brazil in the international tourism literature: analysis of publications in the English language

The paper presents an overview of studies on tourism in Brazil published abroad in the English language between 1977 and 2014. Studies published as books, book chapters and scientific papers in journals were selected. The data collection technique used was the search in databases, consulting the curricula of the authors and search tools on the Internet. 149 published papers were identified..In 2012 22 studies were published, resulting in the year with the highest number of publications. Since then, the growing rate of publications has stabilized or even decreased a little. 73% (n=109) of the studies were published in scientific journals, 23% (n =35) in book chapters and 3% (n=5) in book format. Altogether 256 authors have published on the subject, but only 41 of them published at least two studies. The themes of the studies were varied, with the natural environment receiving slightly higher attention. In the word cloud of each work’s abstract the following words are highlighted: development, management, environmental, ecotourism, sustainable, destination and economic.

The promotion of events and mega events mobilizes at the same time, in a concatenated way or not, leisure and business practices, which are captured by the tourism industry as a stimulus for the reproduction of capitalism, by the amount of other activities which raise (primary, secondary and tertiary ), placing the architecture and the city as protagonists in contemporary urban development. In this sense, the article analyzes the articulation of events and mega events to the provision of architecture and urban infrastructure, as well as the construction of the tourist image of the places, motivated by leisure and business activities. The methodological procedures have theoretical and exploratory character and have multidisciplinary intentions. This will be discussed, in a historical perspective, the concepts of leisure and business activities that raise as moving or traveling; next it will be delimited similarities and differences between tourism events and business tourism, entering after the analysis of the distinctions between events and mega events, highlighting the complexity and the role of mega-events as a major symptom of globalization; finally it will be presented the spatial scale developments in architecture and the city in the realization of (mega) events, as well as its impact on the city's image. As a synthesis, it is important to notice that spatial developments business tourism, events and mega events are manifested in various scales and with different levels of complexity, revealing the strengths and / or weaknesses of the places. The urban planning, architecture and urbanism are important objects of knowledge and spatial intervention to ensure infrastructure and urban and architectural structures appropriate for events, which should be sensitive to the demands of tourists and host communities.

This survey was conducted in three indigenous communities in the state of Roraima. They found in tourism a way of achieving local sustainable development. This activity can bring positive and negative consequences, so the aim of this study is to analyze the social, cultural, economic and environmental impacts of tourism in indigenous communities. We used the quantitative method with questionnaires. The units of analysis were the indigenous inhabitants of the surveyed communities. The survey sample consisted of 210 valid responses. In the data analysis, we used descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. The study found that tourism can bring economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits for communities. Must develop actions that aim to transform existing initiatives in destinations of excellence in Indigenous tourism.

The community of Barra Grande, tourist destination located in Cajueiro da Praia, Piauí (PI), was the object of investigation of this study. Tourism, in this region, increased creating structural, social and environmental change. The aim of the research was to analyze the environmental impacts of tourism in Barra Grande considering the Environmental Sustainability Indicators of BIGS (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). It was conducted a bibliographic and documentary survey about public politics for tourism and environment, besides the application of semi-structured interviews with eighteen hotels diagnosing three indicators: water supply, sewage disposal, and collection and disposal of solid waste which measure pressure parameters (impacts) to the natural environment, qualified the state of that environment and the existence of response mechanisms to minimize the impacts. The scientific relevance consists in the analysis of sustainability through indicators based on Model PER (Pressure-State-Response), adopted by OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), in order to conduct strategic actions to solve environmental problems. Regarding the preliminary results, it realizes that the policies have part of their normalizations not carried out in practice. Concerning the field collection in the hotels it was identified that they agree with two of evaluated qualitative parameters, proving that the destination needs to improve as sustainability. Finally, it is expected that data may contribute to tourism planning, as well as building elements to support discussions, new research approaches on the viability and adherence of sustainable tourism segments in Piauí context or in other regions of Brazil.

Accessible tourism in Brazil: an exploratory study about the public policies and the process of inclusion of persons with disabilities

One of the biggest challenges of society Brazilian is confronting the issue of equality and social exclusion. It is estimated that there are approximately 45 million people with disabilities in Brazil (IBGE, 2010), many of them still unable to enjoy leisure and tourism activities due to their physical limitations and lack of adaptation of the environment. The purpose of this article is to verify if public policy focused tourism for people with disabilities (PWD) have been able to meet demands for inclusion these segment, also seeks the perception of these people as to the inclusion process. The focus of this study, therefore, refers to people who were born or have acquired some kind of permanent limitation, not being object of this survey people who have had temporary physical limitations and/or sporadic or who have reduced mobility. In terms of methodology, a exploratory and qualitative research was made with interviews of semi-structured scripts. The participants of study were nine managers chosen from representatives of government, of representatives of the tourist trade and of associations of people with disabilities. From the interviews with the public, given the diversity of actions and their characteristics, it proposed the classification of programs/government actions. As result, the research shows that the government has to attack the problem and sought to create and implement policies directed to this segment. However, people with disabilities consider that what has been done is not enough to include them really in tourist activities and say they are not being heard enough. All disabled associations mentions that the limitations/difficult environment hamper achievement of tourism. It was noticed also that the private sector does not consider the disabled person as a consumer public and that are not done research to understand the profile and the needs of this segment. Both the private sector as PWD associations, showed little knowledge regarding the legislation and policies that involve tourism to this segment. It was concluded that, in general, the groups tend to pass on part of their responsibility to other groups: the Government claims it can not do everything alone; since entrepreneurs do not seem very interested and place the onus of lack of accessibility to the government.

The article analyzes the changes in the sociospatial dynamics of the coast of the State of Santa Catarina within the last decades, dialectically connecting natural and human elements and considering the local, regional, national and international determinations that are responsible for its current configuration, characterized by the intense traffic on the federal and state freeways, due to the tourism development and permanent traffic loads and people. The approach method is supported by dialectical and historical materialism, essentially resorting to the socio-spatial paradigm, which favors the identification of the “multiple determinations” responsible for the characterization of concrete realities. Research has shown the dynamism of sociospatial Santa Catarina coast, resulting in an intense movement of people and goods.
