This article intends to discuss the beginnings and evolution of hotel business in Porto Alegre City, relating the upsurge of these facilities with its historic context and locating them in time and space. This study identifies, classifies and discusses several types of lodging facilities settled between 1732 and 1940 and describes the particular characteristics of each one. This article also discusses the importance of selected hotels that became markers of the social and political history of the city.

Kinship represented in family trees, has revealed to be a borderless world. Several sites in the Internet show the history of families and also families that call for relatives all over the world to establish any kind of communication. This attempt for historical rebuilding of a remote past has promoted new contact forms, leading to what may be called virtual kinship, as well as meetings amongst people living abroad. The aim of this research is to reflect on the experiences that started in the 90’s in Santa Catarina State (Brazil) in Italian family meetings. These family meetings represent a new form of trip which may happen in the same state, in neighbor states, or anywhere else abroad. This research focused on an Italian party, where kinship is reconfigured in order to reinforce relations and also to discover “new relatives”. Through different dynamics homage is paid to ancestors who originated the stump from what the participants come. The host city gets ready for receiving the visitors. Meetings are held at Parish halls, clubs, and include visitation to the Italian immigrant pioneer’s grave.

Bonito Municipality is the forerunner of tourism development in Serra da Bodoquena (Bodoquena Hills Area). The geology, the geomorphology and the hydrography of this region provide a different landscape, full of caves, waterfalls, rivers, clear waters and a rich biodiversity which makes it attractive for ecotourism. This research tried to answer the following question: how are production of tourism, tourism appropriation of spaces and conservation of nature related in Bonito? The aim  was to analyze the appropriation of nature and the structure of tourism in Bonito, associated to the ideals of ecotourism and ecological sustainability attached to local administration labels. Exploratory research was undertaken including bibliographical, documentary and field investigations. The results provide information about the history, main attractions and flows of visitation to the area. Discussions focus in the contradictions between the practices and ideas of ecotourism. The conclusions bring questions and reflections about the role of tourism in conservation issues, about massification and artificialization of ecotourism as well as future perspectives for tourism in Bonito.

During the last ten years interest in reordering and enhancing tourism consumerism has drawn to new strategies in the use of natural resources at tourist destinations, different from the traditional logics of local stakeholders. Those actions are generally super estimated and little attention has been paid to its social and cultural effects on heritage as well as in local population. At the beginning of the 21st century heritage tourism consume has brought about a plethora of products and sub products that cannot be easily classified by classical typologies. It has also lead to the rise of new visitation areas and tourism developments. This article analyzes two cases in protected maritime areas where diving tourism is practiced giving an example of how difficult it is to encapsulate products and destinations in general classifications in order to set some criteria for development and prevention of unwished effects.

The following article presents the results of a research carried out with Tourism Planning lecturers who teach on Tourism Programmes at higher education level in Curitiba, and the reflections on the outcomes. The main objectives were to investigate the lecturers’ profile and their opinions about Tourism Planning in order to evaluate the state of the art of the discipline and search for coinciding contents and methods among the universities. In addition it was intended to find out the lecturers opinions about the graduates´ performance at the labour market. Qualitative method has been chosen supported by individual interviews, and, as no previous hypotheses have been drawn the nature of the study was exploratory. The main findings show the different denominations of the discipline at different universities; the larger amount of hours allocated for the discipline at UFPR as compared to the others; the relation between policies and planning; the theory-practice process in the providing of the discipline; the lack of recent publications in this field of study; and the low interest of bachelors in working as planners.
