Although academic studies have shown a weak connection between investments in Information Technology (IT) and organizational efficiency, the Brazilian bank industry have significantly increased the volume of its investments in IT, aiming at the implementation of strategies and searching competitive advantages. The objective of this paper is to analyze the relative efficiency of IT investments in Brazilian banks from 1995 to 1999. An evaluation model is proposed using the DEA technique, supported on the concept of conversion effectiveness (Weill, 1989). Following the Operations Research methodology, the model was developed in two stages: (1) a survey with banks' executives to select organizational strategic variables affected by IT; and (2) interviews with executives to adapt the variables as input and output observable in balance sheets. The balance sheet data selected in the sample were provided by the Brazilian Central Bank. Most banks (72.2%) surveyed were found efficient. The biggest IT investors increased their relative efficiency during the period, overtaking the others. On the other hand, investing in IT is not always efficient.

The objective of the present article was to explore the organizational values that predict Organizational Civism. The data was obtained from a sample of 458 employees of four organizations: two publics' organizations, one private and one co-operative. Respondents completed the Organizational Values Inventory, the Organizational Civism Scale and background questions. The analysis used was descriptives and standard multiple regression. The results indicated Organizational Values as predictors of Organizational Civism behaviors. Autonomy was predictor of the five Civism behaviors. It represents values of innovation and express features of organizations that stimulate innovation and creativity. Harmony, Mastery and Hierarchy were also predictors of Organizational Civism. The present study indicates organizational culture is an important variable for the comprehension of Organizational Civism Behaviors.

The objective of this article was to analyses the viability of the investments in soybean stocking as a strategic decision in logistics. The theorical principle used is the compensation of logistics costs, so that the entrepreneurial strategic is based in sum of the logistics costs, intending to identify the minimum total costs area of the operations. In this approach, it is possible to take an accurate decision about the operations, even if one or more than one of the logistics activities is out of its minimum point of cost. In storage costs, it was took in count the equivalent annual value (EAV), as the capital payment; The net present value (NPV) was used as viability of the investiment indicator. In that way, it was possible to confirm the efficiency of the investments into storage structures, either in a level of numerous quantities of grain or in the case of the studied farm. The annual logistics expenditures are lower when there is a larger possibility of not selling the harvest when the transportation costs are high, and they keep on decreasing as these structures come near the commercialization units. That means that the remuneration of the operational costs and the savings in transportation make the investments viable. This work also emphasizes the transportation costs as a determinant of the sectorial expenditures in logistics.

The expansion of the associative movement, mainly from the decade of 80, has multiply the interest of professionals and researchers on the theme. However, in the management field, empirical studies still few, and, in general, they use the concepts and instruments of private enterprises, without adaptations. The work of the "third sector" and the role that they assume in the contemporary societies, claim to a deeper reflection about management ways used in this field. This is the focus of this work that aims to identify the particularity of management practices and principles in organizations of Solidary Economy. For that, the author conceived an interdisciplinary analysis model and applies it, through the method of participant observation, in two communitarian organizations located in Montreal. The conclusions of this research open perspectives to the understanding the field, bringing new practical and theoretical contributions in the subject.

This article presents a decision analysis for the evaluation of risks in the public concession process for the Rio de Janeiro subway Line 3 project. The methodology that was used in the study produced the monetary value of the forecasted consequences from the identified risks. The risk value was added to the financial and economic values of the project and by this the new, aggregated monetary value of the project was determined. From the analysis it was understood that the project has a high level of risk, although it was shown to be financially and economically compatible with the expected return. This monetary valuation of risks contributes to significantly reducing the final value of the project, making it unattractive to potential investors.

Research on the current state of human resource management in Brazil indicates an important transition phase facing HR departments today: an evolution from operational to more strategic models of people management. In this context, information technology, such as self-service systems, has been considered a way of building new models of human resource management. This article discusses the impacts of IT and its strategic role in the transition context of HR management. Through a case study, we will show that technology can be a useful tool in reinforcing new strategies of HR management when it interacts with other organizational elements to the emergence of a new social system. We can verify that technology allowed the emergence of the political model of human resource management. This HRM model is a prerequisite to organic organizational models where information is used for learning.

This study aims to analyze the correlations between customer service and relationship marketing in the commercial exchange between hotels and its organizational clients. The scale developed and applied by Wilson and Vlosky (1997) to measure relationship marketing in the United States context was adapted to the brazilian service sector, as well as indicators were generated to measure the customer service level. The results obtained by structural equation modeling show good indexes of fit to the proposed theoretical structure concerning the behavior of the attributes of relationship marketing and customer service. Based on these results, some conclusions and managerial implications are analyzed in the end of the study.

Exploratory research of 50 biotechnology companies selected from a population of 304 has evidenced shortage of venture capital investment in Brazil. This paper presents theoretical background and context for analysis of Brazilian biotechnology corporate development, investigating possible explanation factors for this VC scarcity. The presentation is divided into five sections. The first section defines terms and introduces the background and context for analysis of biotechnology and bio-industry enterprise; the second section outlines the theoretical approach; the third describes the methodological procedures; the forth presents the results and discussion; the fifth part finalizes the paper with the concluding remarks and future perspectives for research.

This is a position paper; written to provoke the debate and the contradictory. The argument developed considers different conceptions of emancipation, as well as their consequence for the production of critics. It introduces the critical management studies, under the perspective developed by Alvesson and Willmott. Following it is discussed the issue of emancipation, having as a reference the formulations of the Frankfurt School, in its different phases. It is considered, then, an article by Alvesson e Willmott dedicated to the issue of emancipation and its translation into microemancipation, domesticating the critics in organizational studies. In opposition, it is adopted a definition of emancipation considering the production of two Latin American authors, Enrique Dussel and Paulo Freire. It is also paid a tribute to the Brazilian critical production. The article ends up with a brief consideration on the inscription of the critics as an opposition to the production of functional science.
