Competitiveness and Cultural Dimensions: An Analysis of European Union and UNASUR

The twentieth century has witnessed the formation of various alliances and trade blocs among nations. These alliances have often been more based on geographic and economic proximity than on cultural similarity. However, culture might be an essential factor in the explanation of some discrepancies between countries of the same trade bloc, such as the competitiveness indicators. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between national culture and the competitiveness index of nations, in the context of UNASUR and the European Union. By means of correlation analysis and clustering (K-means), it was possible to identify a strong correlation between the dimensions of national culture proposed by Hofstede and the nations’ competitiveness indicators. Most countries in South America have great similarities in cultural dimensions and form a single cluster, while countries in the European Union have higher distinctions and are separated into two distinct clusters. Finally, MANOVA tests applied on the clusters reveal that the differences found in relation to the dimensions of national culture are also reflected in the market efficiency indicators of the countries. Thus, the results taken together suggest the need to consider the impact exerted by the culture on the competitiveness of nations.

This article presents a study of academic production in the period 2008-2012 in relation to the researches using Structural Equation Modeling as a quantitative method for data analysis. A sample of 44 articles was analyzed by means of the evaluation methodology of quality dimensions suggested by Hoppen, Lapointe and Moreau (1996) adapted for this study. We extracted articles indexed in the database Scientific Periodical Electronic Library and journals pre-selected area of Administration and Information Systems with the use of keywords. These had their content analyzed according to the variables of the research structure: nature, research question, research design, measurement instrument and data collection, validity of the constructs, data analysis and presentation of results. This study identified in the articles analyzed a moderate accuracy in the preparation and manipulation of research when considering the quality aspects expected for a quantitative research.

Research worldwide has identified a strong association between social class and a variety of dimensions related to entrepreneurship including entrepreneurial intention, frequency of firm foundings, growth, success and other factors. Similarly, researchers have identified an association between gender and a series of entrepreneurial behaviors and outcomes. There is however very little research considering possible interactions between social class, gender and entrepreneurship, especially outside of the US and continental Europe. Using elite versus subelite university affiliation as a proxy for social class, the present article looks at the interaction between social class and gender as it relates to several aspects of entrepreneurship in four samples summing up 14,807 responses from Brazilian undergraduates. While supporting much of the existing research on social class and entrepreneurship and gender and entrepreneurship, it identifies a number of unexpected interactions between gender, social class and correlates of entrepreneurial behaviors.

In order to learn more about consumer and the process of buying green products, it becomes necessary not only to identify the profile of environmentally responsible consumer, but also to develop and apply relevant metrics about your environmentally conscious behavior. This research aims to analyze the relationships and the possible gap between attitude and behavior intention to purchase green products among Brazilian university management area. The study is quantitative in nature and is descriptive of your goals. This is a field study using the technique of Structural Equation Modeling. The results confirmed the positive relationship between attitude and intention to buy green products, as well as the positive relationship between intention and behavior, although less expressive. The influence of availability, perceived price and quality between intention and purchase behavior was also confirmed. Despite differences in the influence of the constructs, was noted that the price realized is a predominant variable during the transition between intention and purchase behavior of green products. Expected to contribute to the generation of discussions about procurement of green products, stimulate the development of new research, and assist in developing marketing strategies based on the behavior of their consumers.

The Pacification Police Units (UPPs), created to recover territories (favelas) dominated by drug traffickers in the city of Rio de Janeiro, came about as a result of the courage and leadership of the head of Public Security Bureau in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The UPPs were created at the initiative of a public administrator and, initially, without the support of the State, and have since become one of the most respected and widely recognized organizations in Brazilian society. Due to the success at dismantling the gangs that controlled the favelas and constituted a parallel state within them, UPPs have become the center of a public policy that has allowed their deployment in other underserved communities. In turn, this has enabled the installation of other public services and facilities such as schools and health centers in the favelas, as well as creating the conditions for the local population to freely come and go. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the role of leadership in the creation and planning of the UPPs distributed among the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. In preparing this article, emphasis has been given to the use of oral history, a methodology that focuses on the history of the present through the narrative of the subjects who participated in the events. The Situational Strategic Planning and the Freirean perspective were used for analysis. The story of the UPPs was found to revolve around the existence or not of leaders inside and outside the favelas. Even with 37 UPPs already installed in the city of Rio de Janeiro, each one being the result of a different experience with the communities, the role of the leaders in the favelas is still emphasized.

This study aimed to ascertain whether women entrepreneurs in the Currais Novos city/RN used making decision processes aligned to the Effectuation logic throughout the creation of their companies. To this, was accomplished a descriptive study, whit a qualitative approach of analyse, using the thematic life history technique that match accounts and semi-structured interview route. To the interviews data analyse, was chosen the content analyse technique. As result, the entrepreneur women researched hadn’t clear initial aims at the companies’ creation moment, hadn’t aversion to the risk to lose the time and the money, they highlighted the products’ and services’ identity that offered with a strong link with Seridó/RN region, they had experience in the field of activity in which they decided to open their companies. This study conclude that the entrepreneur women used, in a big part, making decision processes aligned to the Effectuation logic throughout the creation of their companies.

This article discusses the combined use of the film ‘Mauá - O Imperador e O Rei’ and the book “Roots of Brazil” to deepen discussions on certain cultural traits arising from the history and their implications for organizations, as a teaching strategy. By choosing this method, we proposed to help the pupils appreciate the contribution made by sociology to the understanding of the formation of the country. The experience has shown that when using the film as a case where students could examine the concepts presented in the book, their grasp of the content and its transposition to the present day were more complete. This process of reflection shows that Management, despite being a practical field of knowledge, can be based on theoretical knowledge. However, for this relationship to be fully developed this ability needs to be stimulated throughout the training period of future managers by applying various activities that foster reflection, identification and the application of concepts in practice.

This article aims to assess the use of forum tool on the teaching of Statistics Applied to Administration. For this purpose, a case study has been done, with descriptive treatment of data, which focused on an interaction through a forum, occurred on a blended discipline. The forum intended to bring the Statistic´s theoretical concepts and the real use of them on business field. That interaction consisted of discussion of scientific paper which had used the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on its data analysis. Most of the messages posted by the students were considered correct and relevant, defining a deep discussion. However, there was a high level of repetition, many messages were posted on the last day of the activity and the forum was lowly accessed after its conclusion as a research source. We´ve observed that daytime students participated more adequately than nocturnal students, posting a higher quantity of new and deep messages. Forum discussion tool can be used in education, but it needs a previous planning and anticipation of possible problems, developing actions to correct them.

Organizations are embedded in an economic and social complex environment. In order to qualify their outcomes, they continuously search for new management practices. Process Management is one of these practices. Its goal is to integrate processes, people and technology in order to increase the quality of services (and products) produced. Process Management influences organizational structures and management, and it requires a clear understanding of what makes the organization work well. In this context, our study aims to develop a methodology to implement Process Management in public organizations. These organizations are subject to requirements to improve strategies and processes to manage and foster accountability to citizens who use their services. In order to achieve the proposed objective, we adopted the design research method, applied to two case studies. The methodology we structured is based on conceptual models and consists of steps supported by management tools. Our main contributions are the structuration and evaluation of a Process Management methodology adapted for public organizations and the description of the adoption of design research in research concerning processes and its management.

The study of organizational commitment and their antecedents and consequences, has taken an important place in the research agenda. It is appropriate in this agenda include cooperative societies, due to its importance in the generation and distribution of wealth. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the strategies of human resource management adopted in credit cooperatives and the organizational commitment of their employees. To achieve this, an investigation was conducted with employees of credit cooperatives in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina from three representative Brazilian credit cooperative systems - Sicredi, Sicoob and Unicred. It was studied employees´perception to the management strategies and their organizational commitment. A total of 388 people answered 33 questions about generic strategies of human resource management and 23 questions about organizational commitment, based on the model validated by Medeiros (2003). The data were analyzed using multivariate statistics, taking structural equation modeling (SEM) technique to test the causal relationship between the studied constructs. The results indicate that the adopted strategies of human resource management positively affect the organizational commitment of employees.

This article aims to characterize the Institute Per Lo Svilupo Organizzativo (ISVOR), an important Corporate University (UC) of the automotive sector, based on the critical factors considered by Eboli (2014) and check its performance in the development of professional competencies. For this, a case study was carried out in a network of concessionaires of a truck factory linked to a group with a strong worldwide presence, with emphasis on the development of the Master’s skills, a professional who is specialized in diagnostics and plays a relevant role in the assistance After-sales service. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and document analysis - qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis and quantitative data using descriptive statistics. They surveyed 27 research subjects, including professional Isvor and dealers. It was found that the architecture adopted by Isvor contemplates the critical factors indicated by Eboli (2014), there is room for improvement. By stimulating the development of Master professional competencies, Isvor favors the competitiveness of the dealer network units.
