This essay approaches the themes of coercion and control, extensively treated in the field of critical management studies, putting emphasis on the physical environment. However it is done in an alternative route: it takes the historical evolution of the physical space of the theater as a source for analogies in order to analyze the physical environment of work. The Greek amphitheater, the theater from Rome, the Middle Ages' stage and the Italian stage are analyzed. An additional phase analyzed is the movie theater. The objective is to argue that in the physical space the individual's look is controlled in a pedagogy way in order to achieve political, economic and cultural purposes. It happens by using either direct and coercive methods of control as well as more subtle normative methods.

This paper critically analyses diversity management in organizations as an inherent part of technocratic ideology, which aims to displace the treatment of social inequality from the political instance to the human resources management of companies. From the analysis of the international and national literature on the subject it is discovered that diversity management has emerged as a response of North American managers to the affirmative action policies of the 1960´s and 1970´s. This literature advocates that diversity management is more effective to deal with social inequalities because it is based on meritocracy and makes achievable to reach economic benefits both to individuals and companies. The transplantation of these practices into the Brazilian context, on the other hand, bumps into a complication in terms of their adoption face to the myth of the Brazilian racial democracy, which masks prejudice and gets in tension with the ideology of diversity management.

The paper aims to show how the perceptions of six authentizotic organizational characteristics - spirit of camaraderie, credibility of the leader, open and frank communication with the leader, opportunities for learning and self-development, equity, work-family conciliation - explain three dimensions of organizational commitment. In the first step, a study carried in Portugal to build and validate the authentizotic organizations construct was replicated in Brazil. In the second step, confirmatory studies were carried out in Portugal and Brazil. Empirical evidence suggests the good psychometric properties of the construct and shows that authentizotic dimensions explain commitment, mainly the affective component. The authentizotic dimensions suggesting the higher predictive power are the spirit of camaraderie, the credibility of the leader and the opportunities for learning and self-development.

This study's objective was to develop a method for identifying training effects on performance, at individual and organizational levels, a still rare combination in the scientific literature. The study was made at Banco do Brasil, with 218 MBA in Marketing ex-trainees. Data collection included questionnaires for self and third party assessments and interviews. In the questionnaires, respondents have assessed the contribution of training for individual and organizational performance improvements, and organizational support for training transfer. In the interviews, indicators of organizational performance improvements were identified, based on the highest impacts perceived by the respondents. The results demonstrate that the perceived impact of training, for most part of individual and organizational performances, was considered between good and great. The methodology used was adequate to identify organizational performances improvement noticed as most affected by the training. Methodological and theoretical implications and future perspectives are discussed.

This paper is about the relationship between management, a First World discipline, and the Third World. Management is widely assumed to apply in organizations in modern or post-modern societies. However a distinctive form of management, Development Administration and Management (DAM) exists and is applied to Third World nation-states: these are deemed in the First World to require modernization. This article sets out the institutional and conceptual separation and crossover between management and DAM. It then goes on to consider DAM in practice, demonstrating how it, and through it management, are complicit in neoliberal World Bank interventions in the Third World. It concludes by reviewing the implications of DAM's, and management's, status as direct instruments of national level neoliberal change.

Many authors agree that the market orientation is necessary condition, but not enough to sustain a competitive advantage in the long term. So, this article presents details of a cross-sectional survey that empirically verified the influence of market orientation and organization size on organizational performance, considering the companies of the Brazilian electro-electronic industry. The results, found with the application of structural equations modeling technique, pointed out for a more expressive influence of the market orientation on organizational performance when compared to the influence of organization size. Basically, was noticed that association with performance is more solid to market orientation than to organizational size.

This article examines the influence of credit cards on young adults' compulsive buying behavior. Compulsive buying is an uncontrollable state that tends to soften negative feelings. In this context, credit cards can stimulate impulse buying giving rise to problems such as debts and relationship problems. This study is based on a field work and it analysis this behavior on university students. The results reveal that young students with propensity to be compulsive buyers use credit card intensely. It is suggested that organizations involved in this matter should not neglect the compulsive buying behavior and that a discussion about their responsibility be made.

This research proposes the use of bibliometric analysis to understand the influence of authors and institutions in the human resources academic literature produced in Brazil throughout the 90's (1991 a 2000). The study mapped out, within the 290 articles published in the Enanpad proceedings, the constitution, origin, and relationship patterns of all citations, authors and institutions that were cited in the period's published articles. The bibliometric pattern of 5814 citations was analyzed, resulting 342 authors and 51 institutions. Results show an area with high level of self-citation and endogeny and elevated incidence of references to newspapers, magazines and foreign, non-academic authors. This study ends offering to the area suggestions for development and debate coming from the results and the comparison with prior studies using the same sample base.
