Researchers have suggested the validity of introduction of environmental management to marketing strategies. However, no attention has been given to the prediction of consumers loyalty to banking organizations as a result of their banks’ environmental positioning. The objective of this research is to measure if the perception that a retail bank is environmentally responsible explains the satisfaction, the trust and the attitudinal and behavioral loyalty of costumers. An empirical study of a descriptive nature was developed. Its data was collected by means of a survey sample of 914 checking account holders from a retail bank in Brazil and analyzed by Structural Equation Modelling technique. The customer’s perception of an environmentally responsible retail bank can explain satisfaction and trust. On the other hand, satisfaction was more relevant in estimating attitudinal loyalty than trust. However, neither satisfaction nor trust explained behavioral loyalty.

Despite the advances in studies on the effects of distribution channel strategies, the relation between distribution and market share is still a little explored topic, especially in emerging markets. For that reason, this paper’s core proposal is to investigate the relation between distribution and market share variables in the Brazilian market, specifically in the beverage sector, comparing two important types of consumer market channels: big and small supermarkets. For such, an empirical study was conducted based on a database with more than 180 stock keeping units (SKUs) sold by three manufacturers in the southeast of Brazil. By means of statistical analyses, the results indicate a convex and growing relation among the variables studied. In other words, there is an inflection point at which market share growth is more accentuated because of distribution. Furthermore, the curves that describe these variables show different effects when comparing big and small supermarkets.

In the knowledge economy, intellectual capital is increasingly becoming important as a source of core competences. A core competence is obtained by combining internal and external factors of the company by means of the strategy to generate better performance than its competitors. The Argentinian wood SMEs often have specific characteristics and, in particular, a limited intellectual capital. Consequently, it is expected that the process of establishing core competences is different. This paper analyzes the characteristics of that process. The results show how they organize their resources and capabilities to provide their competitiveness. This competitiveness leads to better organizational performance, but does not directly affect economic performance.

Do stakeholders matter in strategic decision making of a sports organization?

This study aims to identify and prioritize the stakeholders involved in making decisions in a sports organization. A multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the influence of the attributes of power, legitimacy and urgency on the salience of the various stakeholders. The results showed a convergence of external and internal decision makers’ perceptions, concerning the three main stakeholder groups: top management, sponsors and member association. Pearson correlations identified four types of stakeholder: definitive, dangerous, demanding and non-stakeholders. A generalized differentiation was also found in stakeholder classification, regarding evaluation of attributes, between external and internal decision makers. In addition, the study suggests the success of organizations’ management will depend on correct identification of stakeholders and consequent assessment of their relevance, in order to highlight who should get priority, and how, in strategic decision making.

Performance in cross-border mergers and acquisitions: an empirical analysis of the Brazilian case

This study aims to investigate whether the cross-border acquisitions made by Brazilian companies over the past 15 years have improved their financial performance. Drawing on Institutional, Socio-cultural and Organizational Learning theories, this study develops and empirically tests several hypotheses on the determinants of M&A performance. The results demonstrate that the cross-border acquisitions of Brazilian companies improve their financial performance. Financial performance tends to be positive if the cultural distance between the countries of the acquiring and acquired companies is low to medium and if the institutional context in which the acquired company operates is developed. We also find that the relationship between the previous experience of acquiring companies in international M&As and the performance of a new cross-border operation follows an inverted U shape. These findings suggest that studies on international M&As should include the M&A experience of the acquiring firm as well as the institutional characteristics of its target countries.

This paper presents a study on the intentions to quit of employees working in Colombian cooperatives. These enterprises were created to include woman affected by political violence into the labor market. According to some scholars, cooperative enterprises driven by a fundamental social mission face retention and recruitment problems. 332 workers participated in the survey. Structural Equation Modeling was used for data analyses. The findings suggest that within this type of enterprise, leader-member exchange has a negative indirect effect on turnover intentions. Consistent with previous research, this relationship is mediated by perceived organizational support. Moreover, the relationship between leader-member exchange and turnover intentions is also mediated by job-embeddedness. The limitations of the study as well as practical and theoretical implications are presented at the end of the paper.

Literature widely assigns positive effects on entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance to decentralization of organizational structure; at the same time, there is evidence of positive effects of centralization of complex procedures in large hospitals on the results of cancer treatment. This study intends to evaluate the effects of centralization of pathology laboratories at the National Cancer Institute (INCA) of Brazil in 2002 on the performance of diagnostic activity and cancer control. A non-parametric efficiency frontier for the pathology labs is calculated for the period 1997-2007 by means of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Findings show that centralization reversed the decline of technical efficiency in the laboratories along the period 1997-2001. The main conclusion is that the DEA model brings a contribution to knowledge about change in organizational structure in public health organizations, as well as a managerial contribution on the effectiveness of centralization to improve the support of pathology labs to INCA hospitals.

This paper shows the results of the empirical study conducted in 186 tourist accommodation businesses in Spain certified under the “Q for Tourist Quality”, own System Quality Management. It was raised with the purpose of analyzing the structure of the relationship between critical quality factors and results-social impact, how they operate and the level of their influence on obtaining these results within the company. Starting from a deep theoretical revision we propose a theoretical model together with the hypotheses to be tested, and we proceed to validation using the technique of Structural Equation Models. The results obtained show that companies wishing to improve their social impact should take into account that leadership is the most important factor to achieve it. Leadership indirectly affects the social impact through its influence on alliances and resources, quality policy/planning, personnel management and learning.
