Environmental sustainability has become increasingly important to businesses as a response to the rapid depletion of natural resources. Information Technology (IT) in particular represents a meaningful part of the environmental issues that society has been facing. Therefore, Green IT emerges as a way of combining available resources and sustainable and economic policies, thus, generating benefits for both the environment and businesses. The purpose of this paper, hence, is to explain the dynamics of Green IT implementation in organizations in light of the structurationist view of technology. We conducted a case study research based on the cases of three Brazilian companies interested in this movement. Results provide a better understanding of the relationship among technology, individuals, and organization institutional properties, thus enhancing the role played by IT teams in institutionalizing the environmental dimension of sustainability in organizations.

Impact of the social distance on the transgressions between companies and consumers

This study seeks to contribute with the theories of transgression in relationships and social influence, by considering not only the dyadic relationship (consumer-company) but also other consumers that become aware of the transgression of the company. Such consumers are herein called third parties. The authors propose that the social distance between the third party and the victim of the transgression may influence the evaluation of the relationship between the company and the third party, even if the third party has not suffered the transgression. Two experiments were conducted, both with three conditions of social distance in the perspective of consumer transgression (victim vs. third party near the victim vs. third party distant from the victim). The results indicate that the impact of a transgression on the evaluation of the relationship is the same for the victim and for the near third party, but it is significantly smaller for the distant third party. It was found that this direct relation is mediated by the irritation emotion.

Online Distance Learning managers face the dilemma of using new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) effectively and efficiently. On the other hand, learning theories, among them Cognitive Psychology, describe how the media and processes affect individual learning. Based on these theories, we propose that individuals can be classified according to their assimilation profile in two groups: Analytical Assimilation and Relational Assimilation. We analyze how different distance education technologies, classified as Textual, Audio, Interactive (synchronous) and Collaborative (asynchronous), affect the perceived effectiveness of technology learning of each group. Empirical evidence support that each group perceives differently technologies types in regard to its effectiveness in learning. Important managerial implications for the effective and efficient use of resources in distance education are proposed.

The changes observed over the course of the system implementation reveal that the concept of success was jointly developed via negotiation of devices of interessement introduced during the project.

Determinants of the success of global and local brands in Latin America

The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of the implementation of global and local brands in Latin America by drawing on contingency theory to develop and test hypotheses relating to how product category characteristics affect the success of global and local brands in the region. Hypotheses are tested using data obtained from top brands rankings reported in five Latin American markets (Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean and Central America, Chile and Mexico). The study design considers estimating a logistic regression on a binomial dependent variable measuring whether 475 top brands are global or local brands, with product category characteristics as independent variables. Results reveal that product categories related to subscriptions, local tastes, high-tech, and global citizenship do have an impact on the success of global and local brands in Latin America.

This paper analyzes the changes in the total factor productivity index of a Spanish hotel chain in the period from 2007 to 2010 with the purpose of identifying efficiency patterns for the chain in a period of financial crisis. The Data envelopment analysis (DEA) Malmquist productivity index was used to estimate productivity change in 38 hotels of the AC chain. Results reveal AC hotels’ efficiency trends and, therefore, their competitiveness in the recession period; they also show the changes experienced in these hotels’ total productivity and its components: technological and efficiency changes. Positive efficiency changes were due to positive technical efficiency rather than technological efficiency. The recession period certainly influenced the performance of AC Hotels, which focused on organizational changes rather than investing in technology.

The collaborative management issue has been discussed as a mean to generate competitive advantage. Collaborative initiatives in supply chains (SC) enabled the emergence of methods and practices that support the idea that competitiveness does not occur between isolated companies any longer, but between chains. In literature, in addition to collaborative methods for supply chain management (SCM), it is possible to find initiatives for project, configuration, and optimization, among others. However, there is little adhesion of collaborative methods for SCM, as well as implementation difficulties. The purpose of the article is to investigate the collaborative methods concerning the coordination of SC and analyze their characteristics and implementation difficulties. A systematic review indicated the Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) as the most discussed collaborative approach and, subsequently, a case study identified difficulties in the implementation that complemented what was researched in the literature.

This article examines the goals, instruments and characteristics of Information and Communication Technolgy (ICT) enabled innovations in the Brazilian software industry emphasizing technologies, transmitting channels, learning processes, and organizational changes required by advanced digital tools. The methodology steams from the adaptation of an existing taxonomy for our specific purposes and the development of a field research in Brazil, with the help of the software Atlas.ti. We found that ICT enabled innovations are not isolated events, since they affect existing processes, the relationship with clients and suppliers, and require greater integration of organizational functions. Important differences were observed due to the firms’ size, internationalization level, technical capabilities and access to proprietary technology.

Cross-country study on the determinants of bank financial distress

Bank failures affect owners, employees, and customers, possibly causing large-scale economic distress. Thus, banks must evaluate operational risks and develop early warning systems. This study investigates bank failures in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the North America Free Trade Area (NAFTA), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the European Union, newly industrialized countries, the G20, and the G8. We use financial ratios to analyze and explore the appropriateness of prediction models. Results show that capital ratios, interest income compared to interest expenses, non-interest income compared to non-interest expenses, return on equity, and provisions for loan losses have significantly negative correlations with bank failure. However, loan ratios, non-performing loans, and fixed assets all have significantly positive correlations with bank failure. In addition, the accuracy of the logistic model for banks from NAFTA countries provides the best prediction accuracy regarding bank failure.
