Franchise literature disputes how the relationship between franchisors and franchisees develops over time. Traditional lifecycle theory views relationships following an ascendant curve, in which relationship quality and performance strengthen over time. Another perspective better reflects the peculiarities of the franchisor-franchisee relationship, indicating that relationship quality in franchise systems follows a U-shaped curve. There is also limited research on the moderating effect of time on the relationship between relational variables and outcomes. This study sheds light on the influence of relationship duration on relationship quality and financial performance in the franchisee-franchisor relationship. Using a self-report survey from a sample of 342 franchisees, mean and regression analyses are conducted to test relationships. Results confirm the time effect on franchisor-franchisee relationship quality and performance, but the hypothesized shape of relationship phases is only partially confirmed. Moreover, time has a positive moderating effect on the impact of relationship quality on financial performance.

Predictors of store brand purchase intention: A study in the emerging market

The present study investigates predictors of store brand purchase intention and the interrelations between them. It deepens the research about purchase intention formation using a modelling of constructs that have not been simultaneously examined in previous studies: store image, perceived risk, store brand image, and attitude towards the store brand. To test the hypotheses from the literature on the subject, we collected data through a survey with 1,938 supermarket customers in Brazil. Our results, found by means of structural equation modeling using PLS, demonstrate the existence of significant relationships between: (1) perceived risk and store brand image; (2) store image and store brand image; (3) store brand image and attitude; and (4) between attitude and purchase intention. We conclude that perceived risk and store image are strong predictors of store brand image and attitude, thereby forming a robust model of prediction of store brand purchase intention and providing a contribution to the literature.

The negative effects of experience and control on salesperson’s performance

There is evidence that the greater the seller’s level of locomotion, the greater the sales performance. In this paper, we proposed that the high level of behavior-based control system undermines this positive relationship, due to the large amount of follow-ups of sellers’ actions, inhibiting them. Furthermore, we proposed that this moderated relationship becomes negative (worse) when there is high level of experience. This three-way moderation effect is explained by the organizational conflict from the control to the salespeople, which is consistent with literature on organizational socialization. We did a survey with salespeople working on retail stores. The results demonstrated that the seller’s level of locomotion is a predictor of sales performance, but that the high level of behavior-based control system reduces it. In addition, when there is a high experience, this relationship worsens, reducing the performance.

The aim of this article is to analyze whether the institutional environment has a direct effect on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting practices or if this effect is explained by the influence of the institutional environment on Corporate Governance (CG) mechanisms. To conduct our study, we focused on two countries that reflect different types of institutional environment: relation-based (Brazil) and rule-based (Spain). Based on our results, we can affirm that the institutional environment influences CG mechanisms (Board Size and Reference Shareholder) as well as companies’ CSR disclosure. Additionally, the CG mechanisms affected by the institutional environment also help to explain differences in CSR reporting practices. As relation-based societies evolve into rules-based environments, the information disclosed about CSR becomes more complex due to a strengthening of CG mechanisms.

The mediated effect of formal and informal control on governance forms

The present paper employs the perspective of Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) to analyze the relevance of formal and informal controls in selecting the governance form. The evidence supports the influence of frequency, information sharing and relation-specific investments as a cause of control mechanisms, and the effect of these factors on the choice of the governance form, but there is no evidence about the combined interaction between these variables. The present work proposes that there is a mediation effect of formal and informal norms on the relationship between the TCE variables (frequency, information asymmetry and relation-specific investments) and the governance form. We applied Structural Equation Modelling to companies in the telecommunications sector in Spain. Our results confirm the opposite effect of formal and informal controls on the selection of governance forms and the mediation effect of these mechanisms of control on the selection of the governance form.

The purpose of the current research is to determine the influence of creative marketing strategies and effective execution on business unit performance. Moreover, strategic orientation and environmental uncertainty are used as moderating variables. Data are collected from 368 key informants working in Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), banking, pharmaceutical, chemical, insurance, and engineering industries using a multi-stage random sampling technique. Factor analysis and multiple hierarchal regressions are used to test the study hypotheses. The results indicate that creative marketing strategy and effective execution are positively associated with business performance. Moreover, environmental uncertainty and strategic orientation play a moderating role in the above relationships.
