This study examines the effects of (in)consistent leadership behaviors in promoting (or suppressing) relevant work outcomes for temporary employees such as interns. Specifically, to better understand the drivers of internship effectiveness, we hypothesized that supervisor humor interacts with leadership style, sending implicit messages about the organizational and supervisory relationship, thus shaping interns’ attitudes and behaviors. Using a sample of 164 interns, we empirically examined the moderating effect of humor (affiliative and aggressive) on the relationship between leadership styles (transformational and laissez-faire), attitudes (satisfaction and stress), and behaviors (negligence and job acceptance intentions) using a two-wave research design. Our findings were consistent with the hypotheses, suggesting that humor needs to be tailored to leadership styles to predict interns’ attitudinal and behavioral responses, with different types of humor interacting differently across leadership styles. Implications for further research are discussed.

Workers’ happiness is a determining factor of their short- and long-term efficiency. Several scholars have attempted to develop happiness measurement frameworks. The present work analyzes the validity of a scale proposed by Del Junco, Espasandín, Dutschke, and Palacios (2013) in which factors determining worker happiness are elucidated and examined. The work provides a guide for validating scales using a structural and confirmatory approach on the basis of data derived from 262 companies in the province of Seville (Spain). The scale examines two dimensions—factors related to the job and factors related to the worker—that confirm the need to combine both individual and environmental perspectives when analyzing worker happiness.

The objective of this article is to analyze academic productivism in graduate schools of management in Brazil from a multilevel perspective. First, we discuss the emergence of productivism, in addition to reflecting on the conflict between teaching and research as a manifestation of productivism. Next, we analyze this phenomenon at three levels—governmental, institutional, and individual—which may help management researchers examine its impact on productivity, working conditions, and professor well-being. Based on the reflections presented here, we recommend defining academic productivism as a performative act that institutionalizes a set of actions and behaviors, characterizes social representation as an area of knowledge, delimits a system of beliefs and values oriented to a performative culture incorporated socially into action, and affects the working conditions, health, well -being and careers of the professors who are part of the community.

This paper discusses five propositions that aim to reinterpret roles in contemporary Human Resources Management (HRM) as pro-business, inclusive, focused on the long-term sustainability of organizations and individuals, and beyond the immediate interests of shareholders. The propositions place relations between people at the center of HRM. Doing so requires an ethical and thorough analysis of the field and of organizations, which evolve and commit to new priorities. In fact, HRM has not yet clarified its role in sustainable management, beyond organizational boundaries and environmental issues, and is still at the margins of socio-environmental responsibility strategies. The debate allows for an approach that goes beyond how companies perpetuate social and enviromental issues in the world of work and society .
