The competence construct comes gaining space in the academic discussion due to its importance for the management of people and, in consequence, for the performance of the organizations, including in those companies called small. This present work, characterized as exploratory and descriptive, has a purpose to analyze the understanding of managers/administrators performing at local productive arrangement (APL) of caps of Apucarana’s city (PR) in relation to the management by competencies. In this intention, beyond a revision of literature on competence construct, was done a research at the APL. The gotten results shown that the knowledge of advantages of the management based on competencies by the managers/administrators envolved in this study, however it was proven that it’s far to be understood as philosophy business-oriented, the management based on competencies has been only used as managemental too aiming at the results in short term.

Great part of new ventures are created by young entrepreneurs under 35 years old. Even though, little is known about this peculiar group of entrepreneurs. This paper intends to contribute to a better understanding about specifi c features of ventures creation process by young entrepreneurs. It presents and analyses 89 new ventures started by entrepreneurs between 18 and 34 years old compared to 99 enterprises created by entrepreneurs over 35 years old. The research shows that: 1. in most cases, the young entrepreneurs start the new venture working as a team member; 2. they count on lower amount of fi nancial resources than those over 35 years old; 3. in average, the creation process by young entrepreneurs last longer than two years; 4. the young entrepreneurs fulfi ll management tasks whichever the fi eld related – in spite of the little prior experience in management.

Political, social and economical transformations, more and more accelerated, change the businesses environment througout the world. In this context, companies of different branches, nationalities and sizes confront each other with aiming to win more market share or simply to guarantee their space in the market. This current context of constant environmental transformations demand from organizations, even family ones, new dynamics. Seeking to adaptat to this new situation and trying to give competitiveness to products, services and processes, the modern company often makes use of control and surveillance mechanisms. Thus, taking in view the social, political, and economical importance of the family organization, the present paper tried to investigate the interpretations of several social agents regarding the control and surveillance in the everyday working life. Through a qualitative-based approach this research studied the case of a family industry of clothes settled in the south of Minas Gerais. It was evidenced in the case analyzed that the control and the surveillance can be interpreted in way differentiated by the several social actors and that, to depend of the individual’s hierarchical position, your perception will be different.

This study aim to investigate, based on the internationalization of companies’ theories, the ways of integration into the industries of shoes’ foreign market from the city of Franca, São Paulo, and the current situation of these companies in the process of internationalization of its activities. Questionnaires were sent to two hundred and eight companies that make up the universe of small, medium and large footwear industries in the city, with a return of seventy percent. The results show that they follow a strategy of gradual integration into the international market, in line with the literature on the process of internationalization. Most of them are still in the early stages of this process. The main causes for the slow development of these businesses in the international market are the use of intermediaries in the marketing, lack of own brands and the lack of development of their own channels of distribution abroad.

An attempt was made to delineate the concept of the humanized entrepreneur, through an analysis of the film American Beauty. Through a comparative analysis of the movie's characters and their association with cultural tropes of entrepreneurship, a critical evaluation was made of the humanized entrepreneur vs. the successful atomistic delinquent. The former builds his identity in the sphere of social relations as a mode of human emancipation, whereas the latter is characterized as having individualist and impersonal behaviour patterns. Since entrepreneurship can be viewed from both a socio-historical and humanized perspective, such an analysis can contribute to the discussion of the topic beyond its simply economic dimension. Such can occur when individualistic and utilitarian ideas which extend beyond the logic of purely rational action are taken into account. Such a multifaceted understanding of this phenomenon highlights the position of the entrepreneur as an agent committed to changes in social reality.

The entrepreneur has played an important role in the economic development of countries. However since its origin in the XVI century the term entrepreneur had different definitions. The objective of this paper is to identify contributions for the formation and the modification in this term throughout three technological paradigms: industrial revolution, mass production and technology of information. The central argument of this paper is that "entrepreneur" refers to a term dynamic and multifaceted, influenced by technological and social revolutions. These paradigms lead to four types of entrepreneurs: individual, intra-entrepreneur, collective and social entrepreneur. Each entrepreneur has different characteristics and motivation, but the main objective is the same: to start a new enterprise. The implications of these different characteristics should be investigated in new studies.

The insertion of women in the market and their access to higher education has contributed for a change in the role traditionally attributed to them, infl uencing their professional choice. However, differently from men, professional issues still occupy a secondary position in women’s lives. Therefore, women choose formal job instead of entrepreneurship. In this context, the purpose of this essay is to analyze women entrepreneurship as a professional choice at a business Management course and to relate it to the reasons why they choice for this course and to study the fact that the students consider important to their professional activity. The essay has an exploratory character and the data were statistically treated through factorial analyses, ANOVA and logistic regression.
