Throughout the last decade, e-commerce has become an area of growing importance for Information Systems and Administration researchers. Numerous studies analyzed the impact of e-commerce in organizations, most notably how it transformed the way businesses are done and how it spread information for the customers and among them. The Internet offers an appropriate e-commerce platform so that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) can participate in global markets, due to the flexibility of the Internet and the nature of SME businesses. The Internet and its related technologies have more to offer to those companies than the established traditional communication and information processing environments. Given the importance of SME in many economies, the success in leveraging those companies’ businesses through the Internet is critical for the future of global economies. This paper aims to characterize the innovation management in a company selling flowers on the Internet. The following aspects were investigated: (i) internal environment of the company; (ii) the particularities of its business model based on e-commerce; and (iii) the processes and innovations arising from its international operation.

The first objective of this paper is to characterize the technology parks that are in operation in the Northeast region as a habitat for innovation that will generate new knowledge that could be transformed into new products and processes. The second objective is to identify the return or the degree of success achieved by the actions which are understood to be essential to economy knowledge development. The article is substantiated due to the utilization of case reports characterized by descriptive and exploratory research which was empirically illustrated from five case studies. The case studies were ones through which we could identify technology parks that have characteristics of a habitat for innovation aimed to spread a new entrepreneurial and innovative culture in the region as well as supports the creation of technology based enterprises through the acquisition of knowledge and technologies generated in the R&D internal and the inclusion of products, services, and marketing processes that contribute to the economic development of the region to which it is inserted.

Broadband internet: a prospective exploratory study on its penetration, connection technologies, and impacts on Brazil in 2020

This study aimed to explore the evolution of broadband Internet penetration in Brazil in 2020 and the impacts on the population and the Brazilian economy. The Delphi Method of consultation with experts was used, in which 98 respondents in Round 1 and 72 respondents in Round 2 participated. The results indicate that there will be an increase in broadband penetration in all economic sectors. Such expansion will however depend on the lower cost of services. According to 60% of specialists, the cost of broadband Internet will be a critical factor for the expansion of penetration. The technology that will have more growth in broadband Internet connections by 2020, indicated by 33% of specialists, will be "Connecting via cable modem or wireless (offered by cable TV operators)," followed by "Connection via WiMAX networks," with 31% of predictions. As for 69% of specialists, the main impact on the economy by 2020 will be the increase of the Gross Domestic Product of Brazil, and the principal impacts of broadband Internet penetration in the Brazilian population will be the "Increase of Productivity of Individuals,” as indicated by 49% of experts, and "Improving the Quality of Life," indicated by 46%.

In a world increasingly globalized and competitive, organizations make the largest difference on the individuals within those organizations and officials display a willingness to increase the quality of work life and strive to look for the best way to obtain a better organizational performance. This paper aimed to examine aspects relating to the Quality of Life of teachers that make up the faculty of CESAC - Centre for Higher Education Santa Cruz, mantenedoura FACRUZ-College of Santa Cruz and the Institute of Education - located in Santa Cruz Capibaribe - PE. The chosen theoretical model for the study was to evaluate the „Quality of Working Life‟ of Richard Walton, this model is composed of eight criteria, each with respective indicators. For each of the criteria of the model, the research sought to observe whether the questions were related to the desires and expectations of employees. We opted for an exploratory and descriptive study for the methodology. The data collection was a structured questionnaire that was administered to teachers of the company. It was observed that the level of employee satisfaction was higher, which demonstrates the existence of indicators of Quality of Working Life within the company.

The goal of this study is to analyze the implementation process of the controls in Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Law, Section 404 and its implications and organizational reflexes within the companies with American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) issuance. An exploratory research with a qualitative approach was conducted through a study in medium and large size companies, being two multinational and of national capital, in Santa Catarina – Brazil. The technique of content analysis as proposed by Bardin (1971) was used for analysis of the interviews and was primarily responsible for the SOX implementation in each company as well as a representative of one of the largest auditing companies in Brazil. The results highlight the cultural changes derived from the implementation of an American legislation in Brazil. The results also focus on the methodology adopted from The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) consisting of internal and external validation of the processes, the lack of employees and departments’ adherence to the Law implementation process, and the relevance of the top management in determining the level of importance given to the new procedures in the company. It was concluded that the SOX implementation process observed significant reactions in the organizational culture and the implications resulting from the implementation process with the exception of the different proportionality of the Law implementation in each company.

Practices to promote innovations are one of the biggest challenges to organizations which seek to develop technologies and integrate them into commercially successful products. Integration of technology and product is a result of a technology development process (TDP) to be used in a product development process (PDP). It becomes necessary for the innovation management to identify the activities, in both cases, to ensure that this integration occurs. The aim of this study is to identify the critical activities to technology and product integration. It is comprised of a literature review, to identify the activities of the TDP and the PDP, as well as a case study of a company in the nanotechnology field to identify if those activities were critical to this integration. This methodological approach considers this study an exploratory research based on empirical data. The results show that the performance of market research, participation in trade fairs, and holding constant contacts with the customer during the development of technology were critical for the integration. Due to this, we suggest the implementation research to enable the development of a theoretical model, complete with stages and gates, which can help organizations in its innovation management.

In today's competitive scenario, regional growth is largely associated with the performance of innovation systems which is the intensity and effectiveness of interactions between the different actors involved in the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and technologies. This paper aims to analyze the interactions between agents of the Sugar and Ethanol Industries in the state of Alagoas, across the three dimensions of the Sectorial Innovation System (organizations, institutions, and technologies), proposed by Malerba (2002). To accomplish the objective of this article, we conducted an exploratory-descriptive research through secondary data and the application of questionnaires to seventeen sugarcane companies in the state. The analysis of data occurred by using nonparametric statistical techniques: Coefficient of Concordance, Kendall (W) test and the Kruskal-Wallis H, considering a significance level of 0.05. The results pointed to the confirmation of the existence of positive interactions between the three dimensions examined (organizations, institutions, and technologies), but to a lesser extent, to the last. There are two additional aspects observed: the company submits an interaction between universities and research centers and much of the technological advancement of this industry is coming from public and private partnerships. It is noteworthy also that the R & D effort is focused on genetic improvements to the field and process innovations that improve production efficiency. As an additional contribution, this article describes a review and practical application of the phenomenon of innovation and its links with the sectorial systems.

This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of the use of public procurement as an alternative for inducting innovations in software services supplying companies. It analyzes the purchase requirements of governmental clients and its impacts in inducting innovations. This paper studies multiple cases with ten analysis units, conducted using semi-structured interviews with professionals in the companies. Innovations are identified in three steps: pre-sale, service providing, and post-sale. The results show that the provision of services to governmental clients is defined by bureaucratic parameters and by the attendance to different process conditions, which restrict the emergence of innovative solutions and, especially, its reuse with non-governmental clients. The study confirms the induction of innovations by governmental clients. Even though this induction is not intentional, it meets the main trajectory presented in the Chain-Linked Model.

This study aims at investigating the relationship between the degree of intangibility, whose definition is based on accounting information, and the degree of innovation in innovating Brazilian companies, measured by the “Índice Brasil de Inovação (IBI)” – Brazil Innovation Index – in order to discover the effects of the recognition of intangible assets in these companies‟ assets. It is a descriptive research of a qualitative nature achieved through documental analysis. The secondary data – Standardized Financial Demonstrations (SFD) which provides necessary information for calculating the market value (number of shares multiplied by value of each share) in years 2007, 2008, and 2009 – were collected in the BM&F Bovespa website. This made it possible to measure the index of investments in intangible assets (IIAI) and the degree of intangibility (ID). Results have revealed that: (i) intangibles, such as goodwill, software, trademarks, and patents, in terms of frequency, and intangibles such as goodwill, concessions, software, and Product P&D, in terms of representativeness, are the most significant in the surveyed companies; (ii) companies in more innovative sectors displayed greater IIAIs, which is evidence that these companies channeled more investment on intangibles when compared to companies in less innovative sectors; (iii) in 2009, the average market value of innovative companies more than doubled its own capital value, and this difference was attributed to their intangibles; and, (iv) based on analysis of the ranking of 10 companies with the highest IDs and 10 companies with the lowest IDs, it is not possible to identify any relation between ID and the degree of innovation in surveyed companies.

The aim of this paper is to present the characteristics of interaction between companies and universities in the State of Mato Grosso. The study of this paper became possible due to a study of the bibliographical research from the neochumpeteriana approach about the dynamics of innovation and university-industry interactions in Brazil. Later, from data provided by the Directory of CNPq's research group, a comparative analysis was performed of university-industry interactions in Brazil, Middle West, and in Mato Grosso, between 2002 and 2008. The results showed little representation of the state in relation to total research groups in the country and the region, especially in terms of interactive groups and businesses.While Mato Grosso has advanced, it is not enough to overcome the processes of late industrialization and scientific research. This proved that the activities of university-industry interactions are restricted and are concentrated in the large area of agricultural sciences, which interacts primarily with the sectors related to agriculture.

Innovation, especially the revolution in innovation, is linked to the creation of a favorable enabling environment. According to Sabato and Botana (1968), innovations are the result of multiple and coordinated actions between three elements: government, structure of production, and scientific-technological infrastructure. Technology parks are the institutions which, par excellence, combine these three elements. In Brazil, they take many different legal forms, the spectrum ranging from private to public. There are examples of parks established as joint stock companies, social organizations, foundations, OSCIPS (civil society organization of public interest), and also are directly linked to the administration itself. The difference in legal structure is reflected directly in legal regimes and different management models. Differences in management and legal form may play a role in the ability of the park to offer suitable conditions for innovation. Of all the existing models, three presented themselves as the main foundations, joint stock companies, and social organizations. This is due to both the number of parks that follow these models and their importance of its relevance, since currently the parks have been created based on these three different structures. The objective of this study is to analyze seven technology parks Brazilians made according to these three models, in order to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the legal form chosen, and thus the conditions of each to foster innovation.

Designing approaches to support knowledge intensive work has been documented to be critical and costly. Research has shown that knowledge workers frequently evaluate such efforts as missing the mark. They are too often left without the help they need for constructing knowledge-based solutions. Knowledge workers point to failures not so much in accessing topically-perfect-information but rather to communication gaps, such as practices and knowledge interactions that do not address work demands and knowing needs in complex, changing, and sometimes elusive situations. This research used an interviewing approach informed by Dervin's Sense-Making Methodology. The aim was to allow digging deeply to understand hidden depths of knowing practices that rarely have come to light in user studies. The ultimate aim is to design knowledge interactions and practices that support complex knowledge creation anchored to knowledge worker‟s knowing practices and to the situationality of these practices. The purpose of this paper is to present an exemplar study focusing on the challenges of doing user research in such a way that it usefully informs the design of knowledge supportive practices and interactions intended for use in complex knowledge creation work in the for-profit context. Dervin‟s Sense-Making Methodology is presented as an alternative and more powerful approach to studying knowledge creation work in organizational contexts.
