Based on the coevolutionary theoretical perspective, this article aims to analyze organizational evolution. We view this evolution as a nested phenomenon which therefore cannot be analyzed separately from the changes that emerge at the levels of the organizational population as well the environment. Based on this theoretical concept, we carried out a qualitative and longitudinal case study which enabled us to identify three interdependent trajectories that represented the macro (environment), meso (organizational population) and micro (focal organization) levels. The results of this research indicate that organizational evolution is infl uenced by multiple causal levels as well as by the alteration of the roles of the three trajectories in terms of the causal direction. In addition, we found that these alterations were manifested in different temporal lags. At the theoretical level, these results shed some light on how the mechanisms of selection and adaptation infl uence organizational evolution.

The aim of this study is to identify the infl uence of the institutional environment on the trendof Third Sector Organizations to evaluate their activities. The organizations analyzed wereoperating in Belo Horizonte in the State of Minas Gerais in 2006. The rationale underlyingthese infl uences, directing both institutional agents and organizations, are discussed. Thepaper points out that, in the search for legitimacy and social acceptance, these organizationsare under pressure to conform their structures according to agents which operate with a clearinstrumental rationality. These infl uences, classifi ed according to each agent, emerge from thestatistical tests. They demonstrate that, in relation to the legal status, organizations structured asfoundations tend to evaluate their services more than those structured as associations. Titles andcertifi cations do not infl uence the evaluation of services. The infl uences of funders and of publicpolicy committees appeared to be considerable. Therefore, the organization’s success seemedto be more tied to the factors that satisfy most of the institutional forces and pressures whichare increasingly being demanded for higher levels of organization performance.

This study is concerned with fi nancing of technological innovation in enterprises, focusing on the Program of Economic Subsidy for Innovation. It aims to analyze the conditioning factors, incentives and obstacles, to access governmental resources for the fi nancing of innovation in the context of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in the state of Parana, Brazil. For the fi eld research multiple case studies using semi-structured interviews, a document review and fi le records were carried out. The fi ndings show the conditioning factors which have as incentives programs that favor the participation of MSEs; the participation of own resources facilitated; greater access to information through their proximity to universities and research centers; and experience in proposing projects that are likely to obtain greater success in approval. Furthermore, the following were seen as obstacles: their dependence in relation to research institutions to propose projects; the need to develop internal capacity for project execution; structural problems mean that they seek advice and consultancy for proposals for projects; and a lack of communication from funding agency on the evaluation of projects.

This article aims to analyze the organizational culture of the Porto Alegre Book Fair by identifying the cultural aspects that are shared or otherwise by the Executive Commission members, and the symbolic implications of some administrative decisions. The research covered two fairs, in 2004 and 2005, using an ethnographic research method with participative observation and interviews. The resulting data revealed a cultural heterogeneity among the organizing teams of the event, as well as homogeneity among the people of Porto-Alegre with regard to expanding the fair as far as the pier. The acceptance of the new place only materialized when symbolical aspects regarding the “Guaíba River” were used in an attempt to mobilize local feeling. Furthermore the occupation of the Square - either permanently or temporarily - also reveals actors, according to the values of the context where the fair takes place, thus legitimating the administrative steps taken by the event organizers.

This article analyses the impacts of decentralization after 1988 in some areas of public policies in Brazilian federalism. It is known that administrative decentralization in areas such as health, education and income transference have changed intergovernmental relationships. The Federal Government relates directly with municipal branches, reducing the participation at the state level. This is an important change because the member states of the federation become secondary in the production of main social policies. The various examples permit to conclude that is not possible understand the present Brazilian federalism in the one form. However, the direct relation between Federal government and municipal government takes various effects in the political system and in the public policies.

The primacy of the object is fundamental to understanding the reality of the negative dialectic proposed by Adorno. This essay aims to present the main Negative Dialectic as a method of refl ection, as well as its possible contributions to organizational studies. In order to do this there is a need to check how the Negative Dialectics is presented as an “attack” against tradition; as the knowable object is constructed in relation object ‹–› subject ‹–› object by theprinciple of non-identity; how appearance and contradiction are elements of refusal to a final  totality; how the concept, while elaboration of thought, and categories, as a mode of understanding reality through thought, are evidence of the formation of reality; and how totalitarian systems are formed. With this, it can be seen how the construction of understanding occurs through affi rmative constructions contrary to Negative Dialectics, established on the principle ofnon-identity. Furthermore, we can understand how so-called organizational studies in general are characterized by epistemological concepts that can be inexhaustible sources of analysis from the perspective of Negative Dialectics.

Most current research in the fi eld of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focuses on large companies. The general objective of this paper is to describe and analyze the knowledge that SMEs, located in District V in Huelva, Spain, have of CSR. The research contextualizes the importance that SMEs have for the social and economic development of the European Union and Spain. It also revises the concepts of CSR, and describes the main empirical research done in this fi eld and presents a variety of tools and incentives for the development of CSR. This was used as a base for a questionnaire which was applied to 82 companies. The results demonstrate that there is a great difference in the understanding of the concept of CSR between SMEs and large companies. Furthermore, the research shows that SMEs play an important part in society and that CSR is often refl ected in the personal values of their owners.

This work attempts to explore Cognition and its transversality with Information Systems (IS) through an analysis of major international journals in order to demonstrate how these fields connect with each other. The most important journals from the IS fi eld were analyzed for their Impact Factor (ISI). Altogether, seven journals were selected. After identifying the journals, the titles of the articles (issued between September 2002 and December 2007) were selected for the following words: cognition, cognitive or information processing. 21 papers were examined. The results indicated that there is a predominance of experiments as a research method, demonstrating its validity for cognitive studies. Concerning the target public of these studies people related to organizations predominated, followed by university students; it was observed that few studies focus on the general population, demonstrating the difficulty of carrying out cognitive studies in macro-sociological environments. It was also noticed that there is no specific approach used in these studies, the use of Information Processing Theory prevailed.
