Social Representation Theory and Construct Definition in the Information Systems Area

Objective: this study explores the application of social representation theory (SRT) in defining theoretical constructs within information systems (IS) research. It aims to develop a comprehensive methodological workflow to guide researchers in effectively utilizing SRT to understand emerging constructs in the IS domain. Proposal: the paper underscores the critical need for clarity in construct definition and introduces the principles of SRT, advocating for its application to enhance the precision and depth of construct definition in IS research. Using a narrative literature review, the study identified 26 papers that employed SRT to define constructs in the IS field and, based on them, proposed an SRT-based methodological workflow to define constructs in the IS area. Conclusion: the results highlight the importance of a careful application of SRT through the methodological workflow developed, which integrates the word evocation technique, Vergès’s quadrant, as well as lexical, content, and implicative analyses to make sense of emerging constructs in the IS domain. While many IS studies have traditionally relied on isolated case studies, conceptual models, or quantitative methodologies to address new constructs, this article demonstrates the potential of SRT to do so — especially when combined with other methodological approaches, as presented in the proposed methodological workflow. Thus, this comprehensive approach can significantly improve the process of defining and interpreting emerging constructs in IS research. Consequently, IS scholars can use this article as a guide to achieve this goal.

Objective: this study aims to examine whether the macro and individual contexts can alter the behavioral dynamics of environmentally oriented consumption and anti-consumption. Theoretical approach: the study emphasizes the role of the interaction between institutional factors and personal perceptions – mediated by social and cultural networks – in promoting sustainable practices. Method: multilevel modeling was used to analyze both individual and country-level effects using data from over 24,000 individuals across 25 European countries. Results: the findings reveal that supportive macro conditions and stronger individual concern for climate change increase the likelihood of environmentally responsible consumption. As basic conditions to sustainable development and climate change mitigation are met, individuals are more likely to adopt behaviors that respect planetary limits. Conclusion: this research contributes to the literature on sustainability by quantitatively integrating both contextual levels – an approach that is still uncommon – and by demonstrating how individual perceptions and broader political and cultural environments jointly shape sustainable consumer behavior. The results provide valuable information for public policies that aim to achieve climate goals and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Smart City Living Lab Governance Paths to Sustainability: Bibliometric and Content Analysis

Objective: this paper examines how academic literature addresses the governance of Smart City Living Labs (SCLLs) and their role in promoting sustainability, inclusivity, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This proposal presents a framework that synthesizes SCLL governance, structured around infrastructure needs, motivating elements, and tools for citizen co-creation. The goal is to support stakeholders in shaping labs that foster innovation and sustainability. The study argues that SCLLs’ success relies on governance models beyond hierarchical or technocratic logic, emphasizing co-creation, shared responsibility, and local solutions. It critiques the lack of Global South representation and calls for inclusive engagement. Theoretical approach: drawing on collaborative, experimental and relational governance theories, the paper integrates insights from innovation management, urban studies, and sustainability science. The main provocation concerns the epistemological and geographic imbalance in literature, dominated by Northern contexts. The paper urges broader inclusion of Southern perspectives. Methods: this study employs a mixed-methods approach that combines bibliometric analysis and content-based review from Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO, Scielo, and Spell, analyzed using R Studio. Results: the findings reveal a concentration in the Global North, rising interest in co-creation, and the identification of various governance types. Conclusions: the proposed framework systematizes key factors for implementing sustainable SCLLs, guiding inclusive and adaptive urban innovation.

Challenges to Substantive Inclusion in Organizations: A Phenomenological Study with Deaf People

Objective: in this study, we seek to understand, from a substantive perspective of analysis, the process of inclusion/exclusion of deaf individuals in organizations. Theoretical approach: we introduce the discussion based on the inclusion-exclusion process and the need to listen to what included subjects have to say. As the results (essences) are presented, some important concepts are discussed: deaf culture, identity and ‘deafhood’; social organization; and communicational action. Taking the interactionist perspective as a basis, which highlights communication and intersubjectively shared language, the confrontation between the symbolic universes of the deaf and the hearing is brought into discussion as ultimate challenges to inclusion. Method: we adopted phenomenology as a methodological horizon to analyze the deaf workers’ lived experience in an industrial unit of a multinational company.Results: the study resulted in three essences: (a) work in its ontological dimension, as an opportunity to express the equality of the deaf in relation to the hearing; (b) the need for cultural exchange based on the communicational action between deaf and hearing individuals; and (c) the need for acceptance and belonging to the social organization. Conclusion: we conclude by presenting the inclusion-exclusion process, in which the sharing of meanings, based on sign language, leads to integration into the social organization. Such integration allows for the recognition of work and full participation in organizational processes. The mediating element is communication, which can be a bridge or a barrier to inclusion and is mobilized through affective relationships between deaf and hearing people. From a substantive point of view, being included means, for the deaf person, having a recognized job, in which they can perform not only a task but also engage in a cultural exchange with hearing people, in order to participate in the daily social organization.

Objective: this research paper reviews the political and economic factors surrounding the phenomenon of de-dollarization among the BRICS nations. Theoretical approach: de-dollarization refers to the strategic shift away from the United States dollar as the dominant currency in international trade and financial transactions. BRICS is a power group similar to the group of seven that features the five most important emerging economies, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Method: we used a systematic literature review method employing keyword search in Web of Science. Results: the resulting filtered publications helped us to get a comprehensive picture of the main factors and implications of the de-dollarization process in those countries. Conclusion: based on these findings, we introduce new perspectives grouped into challenges, implications, and future lines of research.

Do Informal Controls and Cooperation Trigger Resilience in Role Dependence in Startups?

Objective: this article examines the influence of informal controls on resilience in role dependency, with the mediating intervention of cooperation and the moderating intervention of relational difficulties. Theoretical approach: organizational literature, in light of positive psychology, considers resilience to be a developed trait, which leads to the presumption that resilience related to role dependency can be triggered by informal controls, as they reflect values, norms, and expectations that support the development of organizational resilience capabilities. Method: structural equation modeling using partial least squares was applied to data collected through a survey with managers of Brazilian incubated startups. Results: the research findings reveal that informal controls do not directly influence resilience in role dependency, only through cooperation. Furthermore, informal controls have a direct influence on cooperation which, in turn, affects resilience in role dependency. However, relational difficulties did not present a moderating effect on the relationship between cooperation and resilience in role dependency. Conclusions: these results have implications in showing that resilience in role dependency is not directly influenced by informal controls, but rather through the mediation of cooperation. This highlights the importance of cooperation and the need to foster it in order to promote resilience in startups, due to their limited staff. Thus, it deepens the understanding of the potential influence of informal controls and cooperation on resilience in role dependency in disruptive contexts and resource-scarce environments, common among incubated startups.
