Abstract:
The growing implementation of clinical information systems has led to several transformations within hospitals. However, scientific literature has revealed that most of these enterprises fall short of their main objectives. Thus, from an explanatory-exploratory case study, this article investigates the main causes of the unsuccessful implementation of an electronic prescription system in a general hospital, adopting as its theoretical background the resistance to information systems, as developed by Kling (1980) and Markus (1983). The study shows, for the case under analysis, that the main hurdles to deploying the system successfully were: the age of the medical doctors; excessive concern over the safety of the system; inadequate technological infrastructure; the medical doctors’ employment relationship; and the interference of the system with the power and autonomy of the medical doctors. The paper concludes that the hospital’s intra-organizational context must be analyzed in a systemic way in order to understand fully how the system will be accepted and used by its main potential users – the medical doctors.
