Abstract:
This work analyzed if accounting conservatism is different between family and non-family firms. T the differences of corporate governance in family and non-family companies can influence on quality of financial reporting. This research has following question: The family firms exhibit more accounting conservatism than non-family firms? The paper’s objective was analyzsed accounting conservatism in family and non-family firms. We used the Ball and Shivakumar model (2005) in sample with companies listed in 100 Brazil Index of BM&FBovespa, between years 2006 and 2010. The evidences appoint that family firms present large reverse of losses than non-family companies, suggesting that they have more aggressive accounting practices. However, we cannot confirm statistical significance of differences between both companies.
