This paper analyses market reaction to splits - stock splits and stock dividends made by companies traded at the São Paulo Stock Exchange. We found positive and significant returns around first day ex. Due to Brazilian characteristics of the capital market and of its economy, signaling, tick size and optimal price range hypothesis seems not to be good explanations, liquidity tests give us mixed signals.

This essay searches for an interpretation to help a better understanding of the differences between academic production and the so-called literature of consultancy market in business administration. It is focused on administrative theory as language. The development of the theme brings to other fundamental question: the use of administrative theory in schools and situations of training. Conceptual interpretation is found in the field of discourse pragmatics, in the non-empirical way the philosophy of language does. The thought of Wittgenstein is in the center of the argumentative structure of the article and is complemented by other authors, nowadays widely referred to, as him. The pragmatic turn (formulating understanding from linguistic action, not directly from conceptualized objects) seems not to have come to academic discussion on administration and management, which paradoxically are instances of action. In the final part of the text, applied and introductive reflexions are made on points where initially mentioned problems stand out more worrying.

It has been demonstrated the importance of the trust in the construction of the intellectual capital. This study highlights the perspective of the interdependent trust management, discussing the role of the employees' expectations about the leaders behavior that shows them they are involved on trust relationships. A descriptive research was conducted using a structured questionnaire. A six-point Likert typology scale was used. The data were treated with simple descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis. The random sample consisted of 331 students of master degree course of business administration. The results evidenced that the employees monitor three dimensions of their leaders trust behavior: respect, honesty and credit on the employees. This indicate that the management of trust admits an interdependent perspective, and that this should be taken in consideration to promote conditions for the development of the intellectual capital as a source of sustainable competitive advantage.

The purpose of this paper is to do a comparative study between Activity Based Management (ABM) and Information System of Economic Management (GECON). In this paper we try to indicate important similarities and differences between both models of management. The main similarity between GECON and ABM is related with searching improvement of internal process, by the managing activities. About the differences, it is possible to observe that the ABM takes more care with the supply chain, while GECON is worried about calculating the economic profit, by defining several criterions of valuation of the economic, accountant and financial aspects, which support its management model. In this paper, we also present a case study applied in a service company, showing the similarities and the differences between both models.

Quality information is essential organizations' success and efficacy. Because of this crucial role of information, organizations spend part of their budget with information systems. Due to the great value of information, the user interface, the way in which users interact with software to perform their tasks, becomes an important part of systems. It is necessary to design user-friendly interfaces, that is, interfaces that are easy to use. To obtain such systems´ interfaces, the designers must take in consideration the non functional requirement (NFR) usability at the system definition. Failure to take NFRs in consideration has been reported in the literature. In this article we show how the lack of consideration of the NFR usability interferes on the quality of a product. We define the nonfunctional requirements and then analyze how some examples are used in a famous commercial Brazilian site, submarino.com. These requirements allow the designer to use facilities that improve the system's efficacy.

Internationalisation processes: an analytical framework

In this article we propose a framework for analysing internationalisation processes, manifested through a sequence of servicing modes. A servicing turn is, in turn, the institutional arrangement whereby firms operate in foreign markets. The framework borrows conceptual notions from the literature on foreign market entry, internationalisation and subsidiary development. Three implications for empirical studies are subsequently suggested. First, it is argued that internationalisation processes should be analysed in light of intra and inter-organisational relationships embedded in distinct spatial and temporal contexts. Secondly, the framework takes into account not only incremental but also discontinuous internationalisation processes. Thirdly, it is proposed that internationalisation processes are endless phenomena and, therefore, should consider sequences of servicing modes that take place in the foreign market where the entry mode is originally embedded as well as in foreign markets reached from the initial host country.

The text aims at defining the concept of research line. In order to reach at such definition, the author discusses its component elements, by extracting these elements from dialogues he has made with two researchers and a technician who have experiences in the areas of science and technology and graduate program management and by analyzing dictionary meanings. A definition with a metaphorical feature is proposed, but including four essential elements which allow for its operationalization. Following, the concept is tested, by taking into account its use in graduate programs, in research groups and in researchers curricula vitae, within CNPq and CAPES contexts. Finally, the concept of research line is compared with the concepts of graduate major area and research project and it is argued that the nature of this concept must be institutionally rooted, rather than individually rooted.

Since 1998, the Mãe de Deus Hospital, a private institution based in Caxias do Sul, RS, Brazil, has been implementing the Eu Sou Mãe de Deus Programme in order to assure the excellence of its services. The quality improvement process was structured in four stages: awareness, development, implementation and evaluation. The developed activities have been well evaluated by the physicians as well as the hospital's employees. The customer satisfaction level has also been high, since most of them (73%) have considered excellent the services provided by the hospital in the year 2001.
