The Informal Institutions and the Knowledge Sharing: The Mediating Effect of the Social Identity and the Organizational Trust

The aim of this scientific paper is to determine the extent to which social identity and organizational trust mediate the relationship between the informal institutions and the knowledge sharing. Based on a review of literature and relying on the theoretical perspective of sociological neo-institutionalism and on the resource based-view, the research hypothesis was formulated. Using a cross-sectional and with Mexican public sector organizations and through the perceptions of 252 public servants the hypothesis was tested. Multivariate analysis (SEM) was performed. The results confirm that the informal institutions legitimize the performance of organizations but do not guarantee its real efficiency. However, research shows that intervening valuable resources management (social identity and organizational trust) helps to take advantage of opportunities and neutralize threats from the environment generating new capabilities: the knowledge sharing.

In this study we analyzed the scientific field of strategy through a research of the academic production published in international top-ranked strategy journals in the last five years. This work was made possible through the bibliometric method, using citation and co-citations analysis, and jointly with the use of factor analysis to rise up the main theoretical trends developed within the field of strategy, and the connection between the main authors. The data collected through the bibliometric tools allowed us to identify the most used theoretical approaches: the Resource Based View - RBV, Innovation, Knowledge, Learning and Capability. The results confirm the trend reported by previous studies about the emergence of RBV, since it was identified the predominance of this theory in the works analyzed here, as well as its relationship with knowledge, organizational learning, and innovation. Therefore this study contributes to extend the understanding of the main theoretical approaches that currently permeate the field of strategy, so that they can guide future studies in this field based on the identified conceptual gaps.

With the development of a financial theory of the firm, the concept of Shareholder Value Generation has developed and consolidated. This concept advocates that the main purpose of the firm is to maximize shareholder´s wealth, and its consequences lead to a process of strategy financialization in which business strategies are impacted by such financial rationality. The goal of this paper is to carry out bibliometric research to explore the field of Strategy Financialization, producing an initial overview of the scientific production in the area, to support future research in the field. The results indicate that (1) there is a significant amount of scientific literature on the subject that has not been published under the label of financialization ; (2) although the financialization process has its roots in previous economic theory , the study of Strategy Financialization is relatively recent ; (3) the issue of Shareholder Value Creation seems to be the central theme in research related to Strategy Financialization; (4) research in the area seems to be quite scattered, once that it has not identified an author or group of authors, that are extremely significant in the area and (5) the main publication vehicles are also dispersed, including not only typical finance and strategy journal, but also marketing journals.

Corporate social performance can be understood as a way to measure the efficiency of interactions between companies and their main stakeholders. This evaluation has led to some steps forward in research and management implications. One of its main issues, which is the study of the relationship between social and financial performance, focuses on traditional joint-stock companies. This fact reveals a gap concerning the object of study in the literature of the area. The importance of investigating small and medium companies (SMCs) lies in their social and economic relevance and also in new evidences these studies may provide. After the theoretical discussion, this study presents a conceptual model composed of research propositions to be tested by future empirical studies that wish to answer the following question: in small and medium companies there are relations of cause and effect between social and financial performance? The test of the proposals suggested can reveal, among other results, the categories of social performance of SMCs most affected by a higher financial performance, as established by the premises of theoretical slack-resources; if the impact of these categories on the financial performance is qualified by way of management, confirming assumptions of the theory good management, or if there are no significant differences between the social performance of SMEs with higher financial performance and SMEs with low financial performance, revealing the existence of non-financial factors also influence social performance.

In the public institutions of Brazilian direct administration the availability of financial resources is based on yearly budget funds; the process for use of resources is set in legislation and can be time consuming; and unused funds in one fiscal year can not be allocated to the following year. This context of constraints to action becomes particularly complex for organizations that act in the area of Science, Technology & Innovation, like Centro de Análises de Sistemas Navais - CASNAV, that belongs to the Brazilian Navy. Thus, the objective of the research was to analyze how CASNAV’s strategic practices of budgeting and billing are formed, in order to deal with the restrictions and rules of public administration, according to the perception of practitioners involved in the process. This study was based on the perspective of strategy as a social practice and focused on the model of Whittington (2006). The single case study had a descriptive nature, which data collection was done through interviews, observation and analysis of documents and then treated by content analysis technique. Among the main results of the analysis highlights that: a) formation of strategic practices is directly linked to the process of interaction with customers; b) flexibility to deal with the financial or budgetary constraints is largely related to the client's needs; and (c) budgeting and billing practice is made possible by formalization of practitioners’ attributions, the proactivity and interaction with customers and the managerial skills developed internally.

Knowledge Enablers and Strategies of Survival and Development Used to Increase Competitiveness: A Case Study in a Multinational Company of the Food Sector

The main objective of this paper is to present the results of a research carried out to identify and analyze the contributions of the knowledge enablers and strategies of survival and development to the competitiveness of a multinational company of the food sector. For this purpose it was conducted a descriptive case study. Data collection was done through a questionnaire answered by 219 workers and an interview with a senior management officer. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed based on the theoretical model of Von Krogh, Ichijo and Nonaka (1998). The results showed the presence of the five knowledge enablers and strategies of survival and development indicating their contributions to the competitiveness of the company. The knowledge enablers "promotion of a knowledge vision," "managing conversations" and "identifying the knowledge activists" showed important contributions to company competitiveness. The knowledge enablers "creation the right context" and "globalizing local knowledge" were considered points for improvement. The research results indicate that the company is aware of the competitive environment and creates strategies to ensure its survival and development.

Higher education institutions have a direct impact in promoting economic growth and social development. Specially of the environment on which they operate. Their results are expected by governments, businesses and society. For this reason, there is a need for management tools that can support decision-making processes. In this context, this present study main question is how a Performance Assessment Model can contribute to Araguina Campus management process of the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT)? To answer the question, the goal is to structure a performance evaluation multicriteria model to support the management of Araguaína campus of the Federal University of Tocantins. The developed case study has exploratory character with qualitative and quantitative approach, collecting primary and secondary data. The intervention instrument used was the Multicriteria Decision-Aid Methodology – Constructivist (MCDA-C). Methodology that meets the foundations of performance evaluation as a decision support tool. We identified 8 strategic objectives, operationalized by 134 performance indicators. Among these, 33 are in compromising performance, highlighting the need for intervention. The model facilitated the overview of this situation and provided a process for proposing improvement actions. Thus, enabling the monitoring and improvement of the current situation.
