Efficiency of the Largest Brazilian Football Clubs: Evidence of a Longitudinal Analysis for the Period 2006 to 2011

Durante as últimas décadas, o futebol profissional assumiu o papel de maior negócio do setor de entretenimento da Europa e, em menor extensão, do mundo. O advento da Copa das Confederações em 2013 e da Copa do mundo em 2014, ambas realizadas no Brasil, surgiu como uma oportunidade ímpar à discussão do futebol enquanto negócio. Além disso, o futebol exerce ainda um papel social extremamente relevante ao gerar entretenimento, renda e emprego, logo, pela sua relevância econômica, cultural e social, torna-se preponderante a inserção de novos modelos de gestão capazes de profissionalizar o setor, tornando-o atrativo e, principalmente, eficiente a fim de garantir a sustentabilidade da sua existência. Nesse ponto, através de dados obtidos de uma amostra composta dos 13 clubes brasileiros com maior receita no ano de 2011 e utilizando-se da versão tradicional da Análise Envoltória de Dados, o presente estudo objetivou efetuar uma análise da eficiência financeira dos clubes brasileiros no período de 2006 a 2011. Como principal resultado, notou-se que, na análise longitudinal, o Figueirense é o clube mais eficiente do Brasil em todo o período analisado e em todas as abordagens utilizadas. Por fim, por meio de teste de correlações tendo como base o ano de 2011, foram encontrados indícios de uma relação positiva e significante entre eficiência esportiva e financeira, eficiência financeira e valor da marca e entre o custo do departamento de futebol e o desempenho esportivo.

During the last decades, professional football has assumed the role of greater business of entertainment industry in Europe and, to a lesser extent, the world. The advent of the Confederations Cup in 2013 and of the World Cup in 2014, both to be held in Brazil, appears as a unique opportunity to discuss the football as a business. In addition, football still has a social role extremely relevant to generate entertainment, income and employment, so for their economic relevance, cultural and social, becomes predominant insertion of new management models able to professionalize the industry, making it attractive and, especially, effective to ensure the sustainability of its existence. At this point, by using data from a sample of 13 Brazilian clubs with higher revenues in the year 2011 e using the traditional version of Data envelopment analysis, this study aimed to perform a financial analysis of the efficiency of Brazilian clubs in the period of 2006 to 2011. As a main result, it was noted that, in the longitudinal analysis, the Figueirense proved to be the most efficient Brazilian club throughout the period analyzed and used in all approaches. Finall , through correlation test based on the year 2011, were found indications of a positive and significant relationship between sports and financial efficiency, financial efficiency and value of the brand and of the cost of the football department and sports performance.
